After riding with Corey8 on STMs hot single track a few weeks ago Corey gave me some advice to improve turning in the tight stuff on my Drz. It was to raise the forks by 10 mm in the triple clamps which I did this morning before a 100km ride. Sure enough he was spot on and the turning improved hugely in tight single track and my speed was up on previous runs through these sections . The only problem I found was the front end now felt unsteady in faster flowing terrain with sharp off camber corners or in deep sand. I am in no way an expert at riding these situations but have noticed a big differance in front end confidence.
Has anyone tried doing this and noticed a similiar effect and what’s the best compromise??May 30, 2010 at 11:12 am #180428Stiffen your damper up Nickj, dropping the forks through the triple clamp steepened the rake the will help it steer great but the trade off is high speed stability
Stiffen the damper mate and give it a try

May 30, 2010 at 11:14 am #18042910mm may be the optimum spot but to go straight there will make such a big difference that it could leave the front end feeling too twitchy. Go 5mm and compare and make a decision from there.

May 30, 2010 at 11:15 am #180430Nickj, I have raised mine 5mm in the clamps for faster steering, maybe you could drop your to 5mm to see if this is a good comprimise. If your forks still have standard springs and damping they are most likely diving to much in corners, raising 10mm will make this worse
My forks have been resprung and revalved with Technik T-valves. Best money you will spend on a DRZ. If you want your DRZ to really handle, get the rear done too.
May 30, 2010 at 11:16 am #180435Good point TB. I forgot the lucky bugger has a dampener. Leave your forks at 10mm Nick, turn up that dampner and enjoy the best of both worlds.

May 30, 2010 at 11:17 am #180437Yeah STM thats good advice as well, Scotty has a good point too regarding having the forks done up. Both Scotty and Boulder rave about their DR forks after Tekniks fiddled them

May 30, 2010 at 11:22 am #180438I have got harder springs front and rear but that’s it , what does it cost roughly for teknik to do a front and rear job?

May 30, 2010 at 12:00 pm #180442Well I’m glad you could see the difference in doing that Nick. Sorry i should have said it makes it more twitchy at speed but i love to ride like that.
My point in doing that 10mm adjustment is that the DRZ has a massive issue with bull dozing it’s way in and through a corner and yours did the same so i found to make them to reduce the rack all good.
Sorry if this was a bit controversial to some people but it worked for me and my style of riding and i think you could get use to it fast.
As for getting the forks worked on DON’T bother spend the money on buying the KLX
May 30, 2010 at 8:39 pm #180444Thanks for all the advice , I’ll try 5mm ,harder dampener until I decide whether to keep her or not, I have covered 3200 bush kms in under 12 months , so I’ve got a bit attached!!

I got attached to my DRZ too. They truly are a great bike and after i sold it and had 12 months off bikes i was going to buy my second till i rode my current and the rest is history
May 30, 2010 at 9:34 pm #180451I have too had the narny forks done up, Cycletune tamworth worked the magic on mine and he used teknik gear to do it, I have stiffend the rear to, all sweeeeeeeeeet.

June 12, 2010 at 8:07 am #180452Ok I have now lowered my forks back to 5mm and the compromise was perfect , I spent 3 hours with STM riding his single tracks and it was one of the fastest most enjoyable rides I’ve had!
Thanks for all the advice , I think the problem is sorted!
It’s now going to be even harder to part with the DRZ:)
