Can you mix some sort of cocktail of petrol and AVGAS?
The AVGAS would definitely raise the octane level. I remember read years ago that guys with high performance , high compression car engines used to run a mixture to prevent detonation(pinging).

Could be worth looking into, as I am sure they would have AVGAS up there for light aircraft and maybe choppers use it as well. Dunno. It’s just a suggestion.

Have a read of these links about using Toluene as an octane booster. Very interesting.

http://www.foxvalleykart.com/fuel1.html Follow the ongoing links at the bottom of the page.

There is a discussion regarding the use of AVGAS as well.

Mate I have used Toluene before and you only need to mix about 1 litre to twenty of normal fuel, when I raced I bought the Toly from the local BP Fuel depot and it was as cheap as chips compared to other octane boosters, dont go past the 1 litre to 20 though as it will shorten the life of the rings

I run unleaded, cant say I can notice a difference, was converted after the 4 day when I thought I had been racing on premium 98 all week only to be told by our crew they had been using normal unleaded, my bike has a HRC factory race engine kit in it, it doesnt ping, it doesnt rattle.
When we went to cape york (wepia) in 2004 we used unleaded, then when we got to the top where we stayed had no fuel. Those guys with the smaller tanks needed fuel so they mixed what they had left with avgas, and I cant remember anyone raving about it

You said the bike “didn’t run real good”, what did it do what is the difference? I am interested as I dont know what to look for, I thought it would be performance based or pinging?

A quote from the links that Nigel added interested me

“A repeat National Champion once told me that, after years of getting around the fuel rules, trying to pour power into the tank, he discovered that he went faster, with fewer failures, when he ran straight gas and oil”

When i tried octane boost throttle response wasn’t as good ,it felt like my air filter was very dirty if that makes sense….it didn’t feel like it pulled as well down low ,I tried a few different mixes with the same results ,every time throttle response was dull, went back to premium and throttle response was very snappy and pulled well down low ,A mate on a 450 race quad tried it as well with same results it may be a jetting thing

Adding any octane booster other than maybe Toluene or possibly AVGAS is a bad thing thing. They are normally more dense than the fuel you are mixing it with and it doesn’t flow through your carb jets like the fuel does hampering fuel flow.

Shell Optimax is a classic example of this and has been proven (by Shell) not to run well in carbie engines. Even Shell now only recommend it’s use in fuel injected cars.
