Cush drive as TB stated is a must, WR’s throw gearboxes on firetrails from shock loading and see as we share the the same basic internals with you (YZ250s’) it’s no wonder, as TB said all derived from the MX box, which when you have it apart stuns you it takes what it does.
Now if you don’t put a cush drive hub on and you do big road kays, can i have your 1st, 4th and 5th gears when you get a new gearbox?
I’m sick of doing 55ks an hour on transport sections……Bruce

operator error I would say I got 40 thousand + kms on XR’s and never had the problem, like you said landing hard with the throttle pinned would do it, was a 400 wasnt it.
The 600’s wear the 2nd 3rd gear drive dogs in high klms bikes but never seen it personallyTB

October 13, 2009 at 2:17 am #156234I think you are forgetting he has only mentioned one ride, surely one road ride is not going to kill the thing, especially if you take note of the gearbox warnings and don’t flog it. I think Dan may be right, the equipment in the most danger will be the part you sit on all day.

October 13, 2009 at 3:58 am #156118Not specifically related but I thought I might throw it in for the general readers: My old KTM250exc-f had some very ordinary piston ring wear and one of the reasons (not proven) was sustained high speed riding. Any form of hwy or fast trails for long periods of time result in barrel heat build up which the little 250 couldn’t get rid of. Made sense to me, I tried to avoid it.
