Do you guys run fuel filters on your bikes? If so, could you provide details. Are they disposable or serviceable? Any pics of installations would be appreciated. I have seen the tiny cheap units on ebay, but I am not sure the flow rate would be sufficient for a large bore thumper.

I am guessing that if you are going to use oversize tanks on the longer trips in the bush, there is a good chance that the fuel could be contaminated, I dunno. Is there a water separator style filter for bikes?

I have run them, I ran two on the dual pickups when I went to cape york in 2004, those plastic throw away jobs. I have a metal one here that screws apart and can be cleaned but have never used it because for all the years we have been doing the long distance stuff and the trail rides fueling form some back yard servos etc have never had a problem.

Ballards sell them I think, stay tuned I will get back to you

    TB,

Thanks for the reply. If you get the chance, could you give me the dimensions of the metal filter? There isn’t much space to fit in a filter on the WR450, hence that’s why the midget plastic units might be the only choice.

I am after the max diameter and length of the filter body, not including the hose nozzle thingys.

The more I think about it and what TB said about never having a problem, I am starting to think that filters are not actually needed. The fueltank has a basic filter inside it and a separate fuel filter is just another point of failure for a possible fuel leak. The simple solution is to use a good filter funnel like a “Mr Funnel” if you are really worried about it.

How many of you have ever had an issue with particals in your fuel causing problems? I am guessing the answer will be none.

P.S TB don’t worry about the filter dimensions.

WE have been running one of the non servicable plastic ones on Trippers XR600 and it has surprised me how much water it will pick up. His bike had gotten a gut full of water in the fuel tank once and with out the filter, I would say the bike would have stopped running.
We just empty the water out and refit it, no worries.

Ive used the small plastic ones in the past and they seem to work ok,just pull them off every now and then and clear any water or crap out. I have also seen somewhere (zyptyeracing i think) where they put a small rare earth magnet in the fuel bowl or drain plug, and the amount of crap that filters is amazing.
