Old One here
As I have a bar mount holder thingy all ready that is bullet proof and does a great job that suits a Garmin I thought another Garmin would be the go as well the other one lived 5 lives
(have you seen Crashes Condo crash that earned him the name Crash  )
I am looking at a Garmin eTrex Legend HCx Handheld GPS its a colour screen and has a heap of other features the old one didnt.

July 28, 2010 at 9:41 pm #184871I believe the Garmin products are the best on the market mate
You have seen GPSMAP 72 (yes it is bigger than the Etrex) but I bought it for car & boat use as it is tough & waterproof,,, I have had it for 7 yrs & its never missed a beat. I only miss not having an SD card availability to add more memory or change map areas on the go (it does hold more than half of NSW detailed maps in the standard memory though)
The mapping is excellent on the garmins & you can also add other topos where needed (Shonky Maps etc) And you have already seen the proven reliability of your old unit, so should be an easy decision I reckon,,,
Just my 2 bobs worth

July 28, 2010 at 10:29 pm #184872No worries,,
That looks like a good price tooScreen may be a tad smaller than I would like but the features are awsome for a handheld unit,,,
July 28, 2010 at 10:42 pm #184873I bought the Garmin 60Cx from – http://www.octapc.com.au/prod3862.htm

Chris……….July 28, 2010 at 11:44 pm #184882I have the Garmin 60CSx which I have been very happy with until it recently started turning itself off all the time. I am told that if I run it off a 12v outlet instead of Batteries the problem will be solved but am yet to try it.
When it was working I found it quite easy to use.July 29, 2010 at 1:46 am #184874Trailboss,
I own an etrex legend HCx if your keen for a ride soon I can lend it to you to test..
regards
July 29, 2010 at 3:36 am #184895I also recommend Garmin again I have one of these
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=145&pID=30925
and while not quite all singing all dancing, it has swallowed all the maps I can gather from this corner of the globe and still wants more, is easy to use, good visuals and touch screen.
And once i learn how to use it to it’s potential me & it will be inseperable.

When it was working I found it quite easy to use.I had the same problem with my Etrex Vista HCX, a firmware upgrade from the Garmin site fixed it’s tendancy to turn off for no reason.
I only use it for logging tracks, has heaps of features, just can’t be bothered with them

As stated above I’ve got the all bells & whistles Garmin Extrex Vista HCX, I think all it has over the Legend is the altimeter.
Downside is if you are to run from 12v power like I did for over 2weeks touring Tasmania on the Roadie the power connection is from a mini USB Connection & the power socket has a 12v-3v reduction. This connection compromises the Waterproof side of the unit & I don’t know how it would go with a lot of vibration. It also chews batteries unless you turn all the features off, bonus of 12v power is constant backlight
I looked at the 60CSx or whatever they were after buying mine & it has a better socket for the 12v connection (more robust)& maybe runs on direct 12v (don’t quote me). Essentially the Highend Etrex & 60 series Garmins are the same software in two different housings albeit the 60 has a larger screen.
If I was to buy again between the two it wouldn’t be the Etrex.
I realise you have the Etex mount already, small price for a new mount for a more robust GPS

I am aware of the power adapter and have been worried how it would go with the vibration etc
I was dreaming about a Garmin Nuvu 550 but the cost is prohibiting it I feel. I will keep looking but a Garmin 60Csx is high on the list now for sureHave been cruising http://www.ja-gps.com.au/ and rang them and found them super helpful
Thanks
