Im up for new grips..
Just wondering whats the goods at the moment….or not…
Also what do you use to glue them on with.Cheers Spud…
April 16, 2012 at 2:16 am #219841I am a fan of Pro Taper Pillow Tops and use no glue, just slide them on with a little spray of contact cleaner as lube & wire them up
Compressed air to remove when worn and no mess to clean before installing a new setApril 16, 2012 at 2:24 am #219842Pro Taper Pillow Tops get the thumbs up , great feel and also wear very well. Easier on the hands on those extra long rides.
Use Scott Grip glue, and also wire up as Eagle mentioned.
Cheers Marty
April 16, 2012 at 2:45 am #219848Just my opinion
I don’t have much to comment on grips as everyone is different, I like a soft grip and narrow grip don’t like pillow tops because they are larger in diameter and give me sore hands but that’s just me. I use Scott’s grip glue as well or paint. I don’t like petrol or other such things as they soften the grip to become sticky. It can soften the grip to much and cause it to swell sometimes, that said I know people that use it so whatever. The grip glue holds them it’s only $2 extra and it’s still easy as to remove the grips I find. If it’s on the XR or something that I will ride in real muddy conditions I will wire them as well

April 16, 2012 at 10:30 am #219850I too am a fan of pillow tops, Scotts glue and wire. I use plenty of glue as it gets greasy as around here and when I am done with them they are rooted anyway so I just cut them off.

April 16, 2012 at 10:40 am #219853just my opionion i like small diameter soft rips get less arm pump and soft on the hands i use wire and glue
April 16, 2012 at 11:35 am #219843May as well put my 2 bobs in. Tried the pillow tops. Didn’t mind them but they seemed to wear out fast. I don’t run barkbusters though and I seem to hit the ground (or at least my bike does) on a regular basis. Now run the renthal kevlar grips. They’ve got a couple of layered compounds according to the blurb. Still soft and grippy (is that a word) but tough as well. Just as cheap as other grips too so alls good. They’re smaller diameter than the pillow tops too which is good. Large diameter grips just feel weird.
April 16, 2012 at 6:29 pm #219844I thought I was the only one…
I too like the Pro Taper pillow tops, yes they are a bit thicker and wear quickly but I find the grip and comfort quickly off sets those factors. They are inexpensive too, so when worn, I cut them off and replace.
I use hairspray for the lube – dries with no mess. I do a bit of trials riding and you seem to replace grips very often, hairspray and wire is all we use.
Question though, my latest foray to Adventure moto saw me return with a set of grip heaters for an upcoming very cold desert crossing… any experience as to what grips do, or do not work with grip heaters? Also, any glue that may be more appropriate than the wifes Loreal?
April 16, 2012 at 7:21 pm #219862I use the air compressor to fit and remove as well. Just put pin hole in the end of the grip, fit the grip to the end of the bars, put the air duster nozzle in the pin hole and blow them on. Then cut the end out for the bark busters.
I used the scott glue for the first time, didn’t work all that well. Always wire them on.
I like the plain old scott grips. The more worn down the better I like them. Everyone is different though.April 16, 2012 at 8:19 pm #219845I prefer the smaller grip. I use acetone to clean the bar the insert 3 cable ties inside the grip position the grip then remove each cable tie. Wire them up I have never had one move until they are stuffed.

I saw that method used somewhere a while ago but had forgotten about it
Thanx ScottoApril 17, 2012 at 12:04 am #219846Ive used the Domino dual compound grips on the trials bikes and they lasted over 2 years in comptition. Ive yet to find the pillowtops, maybe for the IT250!
April 17, 2012 at 12:14 am #219887I’m a fan of the pillow tops too , they lasted me over a year of regular trail riding before needing replacing.
One thing though mate , has this little hobbit got big enough hands for the pillow tops ??
