Well the 4th of July ride at Lake Glenmaggie went successfully.
We all met Blores Hill Caravan Park at menaces van I rode up from my van at about 8.15 to find jak and smurf 19 there already, bikes unloaded and getting their gear on ready to go another couple of guys that menace and I know also joined the ride (Justin and Frank).
At 9am after everyone had a coffee and introductions had been made we set off me in the lead and menace riding sweep. The first part of the ride was a quick blast up past a local lookout (yes that’s what we went screaming past) then along a boundary fence to a dirt road from here we cover about 10 to 15 kms of dirt road and tar. After this boring and basic part of the ride we get to the first real track of the day Corner Creek Track. This takes down into a small valley over plenty of washouts and ruts then up to yet another lookout (again we didn’t stop to look) then down again over some more rutted tracks and those nice bulldozed water run off mounds (jumps) that the DSE has generously provided. From here its reasonably flat going for about 3 km with some small ups and downs and a couple of big ruts one of which claimed our first victims of the day (Frank) who had a little get off.
From here we have to take another short section of freshly bulldozed road known as green hill road, with some (to steal one of menaces phrases) fully sick run off jumps some them being of rather decent size and providing some good air time.
We then reach the next section of track and this is where the real ride starts. We turn left onto lower block track this track heads down into a valley and we seem to encounter differing terrain. It varies from loamy to rocky to red clay. As we descend into the valley we find the track to be heavily rutted and with yet more of those generously provided DSE jumps. Once at the bottom of the valley we come across the first of about 15 river crossings that we encounter for the day this first crossing is barely a trickle and provides no hassle for anyone. We travel along the base of the valley which is a hard packed slimey mud (that requires some throttle control to avoid the rear of the bike passing the front) this track is broken up by river crossings some that are dry and some that seem to be progressively deeper at some stage along this track frank has taken over sweep duties to give menace a bit of a break (I know this by the sound of a two stroke in the back ground). We have a stop in the middle of the valley at hill menace (in his youth) had once tried to scale a hill that incidentally goes nowhere anyway on the last attempt it end with menaces tt 350 doing a backflip minus menace. We all agreed that menace must have been wearing the spidy suit that day to even attempt this. We start to head out of the valley for a bit only to start heading back down again for yet some more river crossings as we are heading back into the valley on one down hill section menace, smurf and myself all hit a bit of a steep drop off (that could have been avoided) and some how remain upright.
We encounter a couple more river crossings then its up out of the valley again via a red clay hill. This hill although not steep seems endless and has been carved up a bit by some fellow riders that looks be about a group of ten who’ve passed thru before us. We get to the top and we follow the top of the hill for a 1km or so then its back down into another valley for more river crossings. About ½ way down theirs an intersection a quick look at the map to confirm we are going the right way and its off again leaving menace as corner man to provide directions. So I blast down the hill and into the valley over a rise that turns out to be a corner as well and can thankfully wash off enough speed to make the corner looking to my left I see from the skid marks on the corner I’m not the first person to have this problem and I’m fairly sure menace and frank do the same thing. Anyway I’ve done another couple of river crossings when I stop and listen I hear nothing so I turn around and go back thinking the worst whose had an off. I get back to jak and Justin they’ve been waiting no sound either so I climb back out of the valley to find menace where I had left at the intersection. Leaving menace I head further up to find frank and smurf cruising along, frank takes off and I go sweep for a while we get back to menace and frank points out that I have a piece of wood jammed between my swing arm and the wheel and its scratched the crap out of the nice blue anodizing on my rims. We cross the river crossings that I’d already crossed once then up out of the valley yet again where we find a spot familiar to menace and I can clearly remember from when we were lost on time (but that’s a different story).
We again hit a cracking pace along the top of this hill until we again head back down into the valley I leave menace again at an intersection to give directions and by the next intersection I find Justin hot on my tail I leave him there and it’s all straight going till our lunch break. As we are running a little behind schedule for our lunch rendezvous I give it a fair crack to let sammy and chez (my better half) know we are on our way. When I got to the bottom of the valley I encounter our last river crossing for the day this is also the deepest (up past the radiator guards). I let the girls know all is good and head back to make sure everybody has successfully made the river crossing (heading back isn’t easy seeing the spread that sammy and chez has waiting). So I head back down to find Justin and menace looking for a better place to cross the river as Justin was nearly our first drowning for the day. As it turns out we had to cross in the deep spot from there we blast up to the girls and a hard earned lunch.
We did plan to do a bit of single track before heading home but as the weather was closing in and we all had a feed it was decided to head back along corner creek track from the morning to have a beer and tell stories our riding prowess. I’m also happy to report menace broke his stack close to home record and made it home with his helmet peak intact.
To finish, thanks to smurf and jak for coming, and menace and frank for sharing the sweep duties. Also thanks to sammy and chez for being for lunch, sammy’s sandwiches and platters and dips were up to there usual great standard.(I’m not looking forward to a ride where I have to grab sandwich from my camelback. I hope everyone had a good time I know I did cheers choppa.
I’m sure jak and menace will have stuff to add and I know they have photos

Also a big thanks to Choppa and Menace for the day and the girls for the spread at lunch time. Not much hope of dropping any weight with that spread.July 7, 2009 at 8:42 am #142484well for choppas maiden orgynised ride, it was a hoot!!
all went well with no major injuries or breakdowns.
some highlights, in no particular order……
going 4WDing till after midnight on friday to see how far in the girls could get the trailer for lunch….and looking at the river and thinking it was too deep for the car even….then riding thru it the next day, well i didnt but everyone else did…i took the easier route…that turned out harder…d”oh
hearing of justin taking a “swim” in said river, spewin i didnt get to see it:laugh:
everyone being on time and itching to go…..
riding over the lookout without stopping at blores hill….kinda like a moment from “the castle”, did ya see that son, back there!!!
soon realising that the riding on the east side is a fair bit harder than our usual west side rides…..
bloody rutts……dont get many usually up there, but i reckon i had a battle with every one of them that i saw……….
the fricken rocks, big ones, right where you dont want them!!!
seeing smurf panting at the first stop, and thinking what have we done to smurf…..thanks mate, you made me feel fit;) hope we didnt scare you off on your first tour of duty mate:)
watching smurf slipping and sliding and then realising it was his tyre……a bloody fortune!!
crossing 45 thousand rivers and not even getting close to falling in one….oh yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!
finding out later that i had bow waved choppa a beauty:laugh:
the wicked scenery that id forgotten, i hadnt ridden that side since about 2004ish..
riding flat out over the windrows (washout jumps) on the way up the hill for lunch, launching hard, (except for the one that JAK took the piccy of:blink: ) going for a hot entry into the carpark where the girls were, only to overshoot the second last corner and bounce over a fallen tree:angry:
seeing the girls and the banquet they had prepared….fooly sick chickys!!!
watching justin cook/dry his sock on the BBQ:laugh:
coming down the lumpy hill waaaaay too fast…..scary sh!t.
watching everyone else bounce down it, except frankos, he nailed it!
nearly beating the girls and smurf home….we went bush, they went road…we were all in the groove and hanging for a beer.. awesome.
having a crack at frankos klx450, nice bike prenty of grunt, bloody comfy seat!! like a roosting lounge chair…..
jumping on choppas 570 berger next and going sheee-it. i want a berg nextB) …..are ya hearing me santa!!
taking it easy on the berg, as its still scratch free, and seeing choppa fly past on the 300 at warp speed….then it was on, scratches or no scratches!!!
pulling 140kph+ powerslides on choppas bergB) SIK!!!!
thrashing about in the single track on the way home and wondering how JAK was going on the super tanker DRZ in the tight stuff, only to see he was right behind me…you rode like a gun mate, all day;)
seeing franks dirt nap aftermath, hearing him say”i think ill just take it a bit easier”, then watching him go harder!!!
getting back in daylight and having a few beers and laughs…
getting to eat all the spit roast as everyone but me and chop and the girls had to go home….it was scrumptious too!!
keeping out of the riding pics……being the ever elusive spidy:laugh:
texting Adrian to tell him he missed out on a grouse ride…and we were drinking his beer:laugh:
leaving my camera up at the caravan, f**k it!! ive got some good pics too. i think a mate is going up there this w’end, so i will post them next monday

July 7, 2009 at 9:07 am #142543Aaaaah memories.
I had a few other pics but for some reason they came out blurry.
I reakon the victorian chapter should put the hard word on the powers that be (i.e TB and Chris) and see if they will donate a POV to their sister chapter.
Just think of the laughs you’ll get.
