after destroying a pair of gloves (and almost losing a finger) on my last ride, its time to go shopping for a new pair.

interested to hear what eveybody’s wearing atm and/or what your favourite/preffered gloves are for trailriding.

    Hey Mudrat,
I`m wearing the good old Fox Dirtpaws,,,,, At under $30 a pair I am happy with them. I wear them daily on the commute to work as well & find em comfy enough. This is the second pair I`ve owned in 2 years.
Only budget, I know, but they suit at the moment:)
    Cheers

I got a new pair of Fox (full fingered) mountain bike gloves for christy. Most comfy gloves ive ever had. They lack protection on the back of knuckles but thats what barkbusteres ars for.

Not sure how much as mate gave them to me and he owns bike store.

I agree about the fox MTB gloves I have set of fingerless ones Ive had for ever best damm Pushy gloves I’ve ever owned.

I have barkbusters and still managed to almost loose a finger and get stabbed in the Bicep.

so will be definitely looking for some knuckle protection

Try the ones with the carbon knuckle caps, DriRider RallyX I think have them for around $70. There are a couple of different brands out there too I think???
I thought about grabbing a pair myself for the longer rides, Hill End, Denman etc

I always ran Fox or Answer on the MTB and carried that over to motorbiking. I recently bought a pair of Shift gloves and found them to be the best I’ve used. I ripped through the finger during my ‘big crash’ when I busted my thumb up so have binned them since.

I will get another pair though and use them as my main gloves and keep the others as spares :)

I’m moving off 500 posts to answer this thread, so make sure you feel honoured by this!

I find that most motocross gloves are very similar, Fox, Answer, Shift. I have pairs of each – oh and an O’Neal set as well. I like the Fox gloves best but wear all sets regularly with no problems.

The gloves with the reinforced knuckles are a crossover glove and also work fine on the trails, as well as offering that little bit extra protection.

The main problem is, of course, that if you are hitting fingers (or thumbs) hard enough to need armour, there’s a good chance that you’ll be breaking things like bones! Right moto?

Probably one of the more important things a glove will do is stop your palms getting ripped in a fall where you can get your hands down to stop yourself. Take it from me, if you hit the ground with bare hands at a decent speed, it WILL hurt! Good leather palms are a minimum requirement for gloves.

Barkbusters, gloves, elbow guards (either part of armour or separate) – all these things are part of the solution.

But the main differences between most MX gloves will be the graphics and maybe the fit. Buy what fits well, looks good and if you are really concerned, get the ones with knuckle protection as well.

We have what sometimes seems like 30 gazillion pairs between us at home, from Fox to Answer to Troy lee to actually quite comfortable O’neals to horrible fitting saturday morning emergency no-namers, but my favourite pair is my old “Works Issue” suzuki gloves from 1983, tailoered full pig leather, decent knuckle and back of hand protection and still going strong after 100s of motos and a little bit of trail riding, unfortunately as I got older I got fatter & sweatier and they don’t breathe like the newer ones so they have ended up in my nostalgia drawer, the Lad can get ’em when I’ve gone to show his kids, sorta like the old flyboy boots everyone used to wear in “scrambles”.

Armour wouldn’t have saved my thumb! I hit the ground fast and kart wheeling and my glove ripped at joint between the thumb and index finger:woohoo:

The motorcross ones have different levels of padding and fitment which should be looked at when sussing out new gloves. One thing that annoys me with any glove is if it bunches up in your palm when riding. Make sure they have good padding and stictching and they will serve you well.

I’m not sure I’d like a leather palm and think that the motorcross ones offer surprisingly good protection in most surfaces except tar. I crash a lot and can’t recall ever messing my hands up when doing so (other than now having a couple of screws in my thumb which no glove would have prevented):P

Moto most MX gloves have a leather palm… either leather or a reasonable imitation anyway.

As you say, in a crash like yours, armour wouldn’t have stopped the injury. I reckon that kind of armour is a bit of overkill myself. :)

I just picked up a pair of “mechanics” gloves from Supercheap auto for about $10 to help protect my delicate hands when working in the shed. The have leather front bit and breathable nylon back bit, with velcro cuffs.

I reckon they would work very well as a riding glove or at least as a backup pair. I got the large size as it suited my hands perfectly and seemed comfortable, in fact, they fit like a glove.

Do yourself a favour next time you are in the store and try them out.
