Went to the shop this morning to get an extra battery for and came home with everything but a battery. No one seems to have batteries in stock.

    What I did get!

Frame kit come with two frame (one standard and one backpac) plus a couple of mounts. This wont be used for moto rides but other shutterbug stuff.

Ebay Scott I bought two batteries, 12v and 240 volt charger for $65 plus freight last night. Also Sutto’s will have batteries in very soon according to Scott when I spoke with him on Friday.
I have a screen back for my Hero had it for a while now, never use it. It fits the 3 as well, I dont use it because of the weight and the risk of it getting damaged. The heavier it all gets the more chance there is of it breaking a mount and getting lost IMO. If you are using it for stills or camera stuff it would be ok. The 3 has such a wide spread it would be hard to miss aim it on your helmet.

There is some gear out there for them

Also I filmed in Pro at 1440 / 60fps on the weekend and while the footage is of the charts on a HD TV it doesnt work well on computers and Imovie. Is a real problem and not worth it when it ends up back at 1080 or 720 on YouTube anyway. I good experiment and always learning. Some of the footage I have on the Nav ride promo video when I am on the Tiger.

We need to do a wrokshop day I reckon ;)

I looked at the batteries on Ebay TB but I’m going away in a couple days and don’t think they will turn up in time. I can get the backpac battery and may consider that after running it again today. Battery life is atrocious. I run in today mostly in 1080/30fps with a little but of 60fps and did not use the Wifi at all. Still very short battery life. I know STM said it will improve with use but I doubt it will double or triple its run time which it needs.

Some footage from today. I uploaded in 1080 which I’ve not done before. Looks ok but youtube still manages to degrade it from the original footage.

I will use the backpac for photos and also playback since the app doesn’t have this feature. Lucky I am also using the camera for work purposes,

Maybe I’m doing something wrong with the battery. I fully charged it before I left home and only rode for about 75mins. Camera turned off when not recording and only recorded 14mins footage plus took some photos. Battery showing NO bars at the end. I’m going to cycle it a few time over the next couple days and see how it goes.

Happy with the footage and other camera features but will need to extend run time.

I did a google search and seems lack of battery life is a common complaint for the Hero 3.

Ok quick update. Seems the battery is not as bad as I first thought. I set the camera at 1080/30fps today, charged battery to full then ran camera till it shut down. Seems the battery bar display is a little off. After about 8mins it dropped to 2 bars. After 30 mins down to 1bar. Stayed on 1bar till about 60 mins when it dropped to no bars. Then ran for another 30 mins on no bars when it shut down on exactly 1hour 30 mins. Recorded about 14g of footage.

That is more what I wound expect. I think I was put off by the LCD battery bar which drops to low fast but it seems it will then run for quite some time after that. Still looking for extra battery just for backup.

Just out of interest I also ran my Nikon Aw100 and Liquid Image EGO at the same time on same settings.

Nikon: 1 hour 34 mins that is with running a 2.5 inch screen.

    Liquid Image: 2hours 6 mins.

Here this is a ripper to help you understand your new Black GoPro 3

    http://abekislevitz.com/understanding-your-new-gopro/

    In summary, for me – ProTune + AutoWB + 1080-60, 2.7K, 1440-30 & 1440 48 are the go. Experiment with 720-120 Narrow, 1080-60 Medium & Narrow as well.

After getting whiplash and near being pulled off the back of my bike with my Liquid Image EGO in the past I decided I hate having a camera mounted on top of my helmet. In tight bush it just a pain and can be down right dangerous. Since getting the Gopro I have had it mounted to the side of my helmet. This is a better option but I have still hit it on tree branches and it gets in the way when putting goggles on and off.

I did a bit of playing around today and managed to mount the Gopro on the front of the chinbar. This is where I ended up mounting the EGO and found it to be the best spot, both out of the way and good POV. The EGO being smaller is easier to mount, the Gopro in the case is much chunkier.

I pulled the front vent area off the helmet and removed the centre section which just clips out.

I then used part of the front helmet mount, which I zip tied and hot glued from the inside of the vent with the mount sticking out though the hole.

Screwed the front vent back on and mounted the Gopro and its now solid as and out of the way. The added benefit is I can just see the red LED on the back off the camera which shows when the camera is recording.

Need to go for a ride to test it out proper. Thinking of also mounting the EGO to the back of my helmet for rear facing shots.
