Liquid Image is a company that specialize in sports camera goggles. I was in the local bike shop on Friday to buy a set of goggles when one of the owners showed me the MX goggles in their series. I was intending on spending around $90 on a pair of pro grip goggles and the liquid image RRP is $400. As always Grafton Motorcycles looked after me with a big discount so I took the plunge.
They are designed to fit a big range of helmets and have moveable outriggers on the side to make this possible.
The camera is extremely high quality HD 720p with a wide angle lense.
The tiny speaker mounted next to the lense amazingly picks up every swear word and girly scream on the trail !
They come with a 4 GB micro card and a rechargeable battery which is good for 2 full hours of recording.
It also has a still picture functionOnce on the goggles feel much like any other goggles , maybe a little bulkier , I noticed no difference in weight. it also has a removable nose guard.
To control the camera their are 2 buttons on the outriggers. One is on and off ( it also has an auto off function) and also changes from video to still. The other button starts and stops video recording.
When on a blue light can just be seen if you look up , this is video mode. When recording the blue light occasionally flashes.
When in still picture mode a red light is visible.
Inside the goggles the is a LCD display that count videos and still shots taken.
To watch the movie simply plug in to you PC or MAC via a USB lead (supplied) and download.
Positive points.
Very high quality filmingGreat audio
Well constructed goggles
Full range of replacement parts
Can’t be hit the way some externally mounted helmet cams can.
Nose guard for the Coffs lantana
Super easy operation
Negatives
May not fit every helmet, Corey tried them on in his RXT and they didn’t fit as well as in my Fox V3.
Loading HD to YouTube is very slow.
Camera angle is down but I’m looking into how to adjust it.
All in all it seems like a top product and although the initial cost is high so is a helmet cam and separate goggles too !
First attempt at filming using Liquid Image Goggles

July 30, 2011 at 7:38 pm #205775Nice review. I have been looking at these for a while now (ever since I spent an hour looking for my Drift HD170 when it fell off). A couple of questions though, do the goggles fog easily and will they work with my quickstraps?

Not sure about the quick straps I’ve never used them but if you want some more pictures of the strap mounts let me know and I’ll post them up.
I’m really pleased with them , I even wore them home on the highway on the way back from the bike shop to test them out
July 30, 2011 at 7:52 pm #205777And another question Nick, did you work out if the lense angle can be adjusted?

I’ve emailed them with the question thoughOne thing I did notice , when Corey wore then up the widow maker the angle was perfect ? Maybe I’m wearing my lid differently , don’t know! Still early days I’ll work it out

The Widow Maker does tend to make you lift your head up as you now know

July 30, 2011 at 10:01 pm #205786Just as a comparison , what’s a GoPro worth ?
July 30, 2011 at 10:32 pm #205793Nickj wrote:Just as a comparison , what’s a GoPro worth ?Ummm not sure cause I was given mine for building the project DR400  . I don’t know if you can dollar compare them as one is a camera and one is goggles and a camera and seem a good pair of goggles in their own right.
If you need goggles and a camera your in front, if you are like me and have 8 pair of googles in good nick well your behind
It is for me comparing apples and oranges

But isn’t the point “I want a camera, which do I choose”, regardless of how many goggles you own if you haven’t got a camera this is a valid option  I have a few pairs of goggles of varying quality and I will still wear them, I think this camera is for times when something special could happen or on new terrain. I won’t wear it every time I go out on my local loop or a ride I do often.
July 31, 2011 at 12:01 am #205800Great write up Nick. I was looking at these when they first arrived here and didn’t want to take the plunge with them only new to the market. I looked at some footage from the guys that import them to Aussie land and it wasn’t very good.
Your footage is awesome and when you get the angle adjustment sorted, it’ll be better again. I’m sure there will be a way of adjusting the angle.
I think they are an excellent idea.
Can you see any of the goggle frame with them on? Seems there is less lense in the middle of the goggle. It bugs me when I can see any of the frame of the goggle when I’m riding.
I have a GoPro 1080p HD and it was around $400 with chest strap and 16GB card. Has heaps of mounts but as I’ve said in another thread I’m worried about it sticking off my helmet. That’s why I use the chest strap.
I bought the GoPro so I can mount it on a variety of fun things I have lying around the shed.
If I had the money I’d have both the Liquid Image goggles and the GoPro. :woohoo:
July 31, 2011 at 12:23 am #205809Yeah great points Mal, I like the idea of the chest mount, but also the goggles is a ripper and the footage is good. I think the Go Pro travels easier when not in use thrown in the camelback. That said I carry two pairs of googles so it’s no difference I guess
I like them Nick, the rechargeable battery is a bonus as my go pro eats batteries :pinch:
