I have sold my CRF 250 and now bikeless…….
I have been thinking of going to the dark side…… :silly: and buying an Adventure bike which might be easier on my aging body………..
Some advise would be good so I have a few questions.
New bike and then spend money setting it up
Second hand bike all ready set up
What brand.
I have been looking at BMW GS 800 took the wife to bike shop she seemed impressed by them so all good there………………. :woohoo:
Look forward to some advise and thoughts from others
Cheers

Then you can take the tank off and still be a crusty when needed :cheer:
Bol :woohoo:September 5, 2015 at 9:36 am #262649WR250R, go anywhere do anything the big bigs do. Sorry Boll but better than a DR, lighter, fuel injected, handle better, better suspension and a better trail bike if that’s what you want. We have over 50k on them now at RideADV without a single problem and they have been hire bikes as well. Only parts other than services fitted have been chain slider and a few front sprockets

I’m confused. I thought adventure riders rode teneree’s or whatever they are called.
September 5, 2015 at 12:40 pm #262658I am sure the WR250R is a great little ADVbike, but nothing beats cubes :woohoo: Id go the DR650 or DRZ400.
If only the WR came out in a 450?650Ollie

It should Ollie but doesn’t I have ridden both and the WR is better then the 400 and would happily compare them. Actually I will have Chops project DR400 up the shed soon so we can. The 650 is a while different story
If only for the 450R yeah how good would it be

A miracle has occurred. I agree with tb. Plus if you go that way you haven’t really become a latte sipper!
September 6, 2015 at 12:16 am #262661My only concern with the 2fifty is doing black top and wide open trails where you want to wind it on for the majority of a an adventure ride it would be good
OllieSeptember 6, 2015 at 12:32 am #262662I think it depends on what your doing , long open adventure riding carrying all your gear ( big bike territory ) or 2-3 day lightly packed rides or with a support truck ( small bore )
I rode an unladen , apart from a large tank , Drz400 east to west coast with a support and it was a great bike to do that trip , plenty of power but light for the dunes , not bad on the open transport stuff but the kicker was while we waited for the slower guys we could go exploring single trails , creek beds and off piste dunes , not something that’s easy to do on the big (650 plus ) adv bikes. In my opinion you’ve got to decide what adv riding you want to do and the bike will present itself

OllieWell that’s one of the places the WR excels against the DR and the biggest down fall of the DR is its 5 speed gearbox against the WRs 6 speed. Everyone with a DR400 always talks about a 6th gear. We did 800kms of bitumen in June in one day at 115kph (GPS) speed with a 660, 640 and a 1200. Biggest down fall was the lack of wind protection with only a screen, it would be the same for the DR. All that said the DR is a great bike, a good all rounder, I just think from experience as I have done fair distances on both the WR is a better, much more fun bike. I am looking forward to having Chop’s DR at the shed for some work soon and can do some real comparative testing. I could be wrong
September 6, 2015 at 3:30 am #262664I agree the 5 speed box is definatley a negative but that was the norm when the DR was first released back in 2000. I dont know why all bikes dont have 6 speeders. Hey Greg I think you should whisper into MR Yamaha’s ear that the WR R needs to grow in size by about 200 cc , Imagine how many they would sell!

I like everybody has Ollie, Australia isnt a big enough market for a whole model development.

I find that a bit hard to believe tb. What about the ct110
aus specific isn’t it?
Anyway someone should adopt my k8ii and give her some love. Give her the life she deserves. Already has the suspension done. And muffler. She goes anywhere just ask dickie….. or is it that dickie can ride just about anywhere….
