I was browsing Ebay last week when I found a headlight for a 91 RMX250. Owner had it from new as it was removed from a new bike and replaced with a MX plate. I put on a cheap ass bid and ended up winning it for $26+$10 postage. It turned up today and as described is like new, not a scratch.
I didn’t really have any plans on replacing the original headlight on the DRZ but for $36 it’s now safe in the shed locked away from those headlight smashing XR650’s.
The color is a bit different but once covered in mud I won’t notice. I put them on the scales, DRZ light 1600g, RMX light 600g. Thats a 1 kg saving, she should feel like a reel race bike now, :laugh:. The bottom screw hole even lines up with the DRZ. Even has the old school Suzuki graphics which im gunna leave on for nostalgia.

Go the old school.

AnonymouseBay is good when you get a steal like that
September 8, 2009 at 1:06 am #151432I think it looks great.
I wonder if it works as well at night?
The original ones worked quite well, just heavy.September 8, 2009 at 8:21 am #151444WikdBeemer wrote:

The original ones worked quite well, just heavy.Haven’t tied it at night yet. It takes single filament driving light style globes and has a 55w at the moment. Maybe I’ll try a 100w globe in there. I have it wired into the highbeam circuit so I can now turn the light off by switching to lowbeam
September 8, 2009 at 8:46 am #151529Scotty I wouldnt be tempted putting a 100 watter in there,you may end up with a big blob of melted plastic, :ohmy:
I picked up a brand new Regina 520 “o” ring for $75 delivered a couple of days ago.
$126 in the shops!

Ollie the light itself is a glass lense with a proper old style steel backing not one of the modern plastic units. It then mounts to a steel pivot with the adjuster before it comes into contact with the plastic shroud. I have a couple old globes here, maybe give it a go and see how hot it all gets. Not that I ever ride at night anyway,
September 8, 2009 at 9:25 am #151536Cool mate
You may need to do some calculations with your current draw though,im no leccy maybe someone else can point you in the right direction just in case
PS I like the look of the old unit as well

September 8, 2009 at 9:29 am #151433Scotty,
Good bargain there,didn’t realize the stocker would be so heavy, 1 kg saving = more power.
Ive got those house downlight style globes in mine and have ridden on the road in the dark, looks like that one would be heaps better.
cheers
September 8, 2009 at 11:59 am #151547Love it Scotty, looks tops! Great buy! Man, that banana will be fast now! Look how streamlined it is!

Divide your wattage by your volatge do get your amperage. Therfore for a 12v circuit using a 55w bulb the current draw will be 4.58A whereas a 100W bulb would draw 8.33A.
I’d be surprised if the cable used in the bike isn’t good for at least 10A

Moto where did you pluck all that from good work, are you sure that the wiring would handle 10amps :laugh: thats my biggest concern
Ohms law
v = I x R
R = V / I
I = V / RIf I x V = Watts
What is the amp rating for 4mm wiring? I thought the wiring for a DR would only be around 2mm thats my worry and tha ability of the stator to provide the power to run the 100 watt as well. Most dirt bikes have to have the stators upgraded to run more then 55 watt headlights

September 9, 2009 at 2:28 am #151635I don’t ride much at night anyway. The globe in the RMX light is 55w, the original DRZ high beam was 60w. The high beam wire is twice as thick as the as the low beam wire. The stator would have to be able to handle more than 60w. As well as the 60w headlight it would need to run rear tail light/stop light/numberplate light which when all activate are another 35w (which has all been replaced with much lower current LED’s) and blinkers another 10W when activated which have also been removed.
All to confusing for me, maybe I’ll just stick to daylight riding and remove the globe from the light altogether saving another couple of grams in weight, :laugh:
Now I want some of the funky graphics like on the headlight for the rest of the bike.
