August 1, 2011 at 4:37 pm #205934Thank you moderation staff for changing the thread title, thank you Bob for highlighting an important and sensitive subject.
I have only been on two paid rides and GPSs werent allowed on either. I myself of all the rides I have run have now only asked twice that GPSs not be bought along and will continue that practice when it is required.

August 1, 2011 at 5:36 pm #205904It’s certainly a touchy subject and it pisses alot of riders off too. I know a few blokes that have been stung by someone shootin some gps shots so they can come back. Mateship goes out the window and bit of agro/resentment can set in instead, stuffin the ride up a bit.
Ya gota have a sense of adventure sometimes and just get out and into it. I get lost heaps of times and it’s heaps of fun and sometimes ya find that real nice peice of track that makes ya day.
August 1, 2011 at 6:03 pm #205905TB, Are you including Spot Trackers as well or just the GPS thingy doofa type things that I don’t have.
Just asking

August 1, 2011 at 6:12 pm #205951Is this a “NSW Ride” or a GPS etiquette thread?? Sadly can’t make this ride TB, your rides in that area don’t come around often but a bunch of us are doing a Dunny Corner ride. Next time…
I just saw the thread split in 2. Question answered.

I think spots are fine as they just update every 10mins which in singletrail or tight going won’t give you every turn or twist. Plus you don’t have to have your tracking turned on. Spots are more of a safety device
Others thoughts please

August 1, 2011 at 6:32 pm #205953A spot trail only lasts for 7 days and I think it would be hard to retrace a single track ride via spot.
I don’t turn my tracking on on a single track ride , no point really !August 1, 2011 at 7:16 pm #205957Nickj wrote:A spot trail only lasts for 7 days and I think it would be hard to retrace a single track ride via spot.

its good to see things have calmed down in here since i dressed for the occasion and flexed my cannons:whistle:
I don’t think i’ll take a GPS on my next ride
just some extra security in case u lot are a bit touchy
August 1, 2011 at 7:52 pm #205959Yeah I would be a bit peeved if someone came on one of the loops I have spent ages learning in my head and they plotted it with a GPS and then proceeded to take a heap of other blokes out on the loop, especially with out me.
I have also been on a paid ride where they tricked blokes into admitting they had one in their back pack too.August 1, 2011 at 8:12 pm #205907I occasionaly take a GPS on a ride, sometimes when it is organised, sometimes on my own ride & then I’ve also taken it to races.
It stays in my backpack & has never come out or been needed whilst on a ride.
I have a huge database of files that I use only to see where tracks have changed, how close to another track I was on etc.
The last ride I used it was Lotsa’s 5 forest ride purely to see where I’d been during the day, there is no way that you could retrace a ride like that using a GPS. I did share the file, sent a copy to Lotsa!
Most rides I can memorise on the run, badbowie says I’m a human GPS, that will be tested in late September, & on that ride No GPS Allowed.
August 1, 2011 at 9:26 pm #205908I choose to ride with a GPS myself and will do so unless I’m asked not too, I dont really see the point in using the spot tracker as I couldnt be bothered riding along following a dotted line on a screen. I find for me if I’m on a ride with other blokes I may mark a way point be it a good hill, a nice creek crossing or the exit of a good single track section for later but thats it…
I think given you are travelling on private property it is a good idea to not have people coming back later to kill it..August 1, 2011 at 9:32 pm #205966I think it really comes down to what the ride organizer wants and that should be respected.
If SB asked if he could plot Lotsa’s ride and lotsa was ok with it and wanted a copy everyone’s happy , but I think the point is to ask and then find out if their are reasons like private land or overused sections that should not be plotted.
If you don’t ask and get found out theirs a fair chance word will get out and you’ll have no-one to ride with !!August 1, 2011 at 9:56 pm #205967osmooian wrote:I choose to ride with a GPS myself and will do so unless I’m asked not too, I dont really see the point in using the spot tracker as I couldnt be bothered riding along following a dotted line on a screen. I think given you are travelling on private property it is a good idea to not have people coming back later to kill it..The main function of a Spot Tracker is to alert search and rescue. The plot track function is just a cool way to let freinds follow your travels. It is by no means designed to be a course finder. I did not even enable that function on mine. My Spot Tracker is only there for worst case scenario and it the one piece of bike kit that I hope I will never have to use.
