    Gday,

I own an 03 KLX 400 (A DRZ with identity issues) I recently fitted a new rear shock and forks and have noticed the last few rides the battery is always flat, I have put a new battery in twice now and both times the bike is good for 2 maybe 3 starts tops before it goes flat again.
It seems to me that the bike is not recharging whilst it is running.. What could cause this? Does anyone have any recommendations for a bloke (or lass) in the Port Macquarie Wauchope area that might be able to solve my problem? I took it to a local bike shop (in port) and after fleecing me for nearly 200 bucks didnt fix the problem at all (on the plus side they did get my headlight working again!)

Theres a carton in it if any local blokes can fix it….

Have you got a voltage meter you can get your hands on?
First thing I would do is disconnect the battery and see if the bike can run the headlight with the engine running. The headlight should get brighter with a few revs.

check the wire connections on the wires that come out of the regulator. the offending ones will be up near the seat, put a multimetre on the battery before you touch them and see if its charging, then clean the connections or even change them for after market connectors. and the put the multi metre back on and it should show its charging,,,should be problem solved,,

    Hi os
If a new battery isn’t charging then what the guys suggest is spot on , check connections and get a meter and make sure you have got voltage with the battery disconnected.

If both these are ok you may have a short to earth which will drain your new battery quick smart. This could be cables that have been pinched or perished over time and cracked.

My fault finding method would be
    1 check connections and clean.
2 check voltage input to battery
3 ride bike then pull fuse, leave for a day or so then check voltage
make a note of reading. Then ride again , leave with fuse in recheck reading.
If theirs a big difference you have a wiring fault and need to start tracing and checking wires. If you have access to insulation resistance equipment this can be sped up. If not for a DIYer it’s a slow process of elimination.

Im not an auto electrician , my stuff is all 240v and up, but I hope this helps.

If you get really stuck and need more of an explaination PM me and I’ll give you a call !

    Good luck! ;)

Considering this has only happened since you fitted the new suspension I would assume you have pinched or squashed a wire somewhere causing a short/earth leakage which is causing the problem. Have a good look at the wires around the areas you worked on it. (I have been told there is some wiring that needs to be disconnected to remove the rear swingarm if memory serves so that is a good place to start)
    Good luck with it.

    Osmooian,

After doing what the other boys have suggested and if you have still no luck, check the alternator. I’ve had one fail. Check out Thumpertalk as well, they have some good tips on DRZ electrics.

    Adam.

Jeffros onto something their, also check around your forks, lots of wiring around the head stem that could have been pinched!
