I have traded my DRZ400 for a XT660Z, and riding home from Tamworth found the wind pulling at the visor and whistling through my ears nearly drove me batty (I have never ridden on tar at speed with a peaked helmet). Is this normal and I just have to get used to it, or can I adjust the visor, or should I take the visor off? My helmet is a Aria Tour Cross. Also I put goo in the tyres to help with punctures, could this affect the wheels balance? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers JimOctober 15, 2010 at 1:19 am #188966Well Jim, That helmet of yours is a bloody expensive one. Ear plugs will help with the wind noise. Has the XT got a fairing that could be directing wind straight at your face?? I have the same helmet and when I was riding my brothers KTM990 adventure, I noticed the wind off the fairing was the problem with the helmet buffetting. It got to the stage that I found if I tilted my head forward just slightly, the buffetting stopped considerably. Other than taking the peak off I have no real answers for you, You may find that there is a on road peak that is shorter available for that Helmet too.
October 15, 2010 at 1:19 am #188967if you are going to ride on the road alot buy a full face helmet
or use ear plugstramo
October 15, 2010 at 1:51 am #188972Thanks Mick. I think you are right about the fairing – I have never ridden a bike that has one – will have to experiment and see where it is deflecting the air.
October 15, 2010 at 1:54 am #188973Thanks Tramo, I might have to if I cant sort this out

Cheers JimI ride both road & dirt and have a heap of different helmets amd they all have some sort of problem. I use to ride an XT600 and I found the M2R Helmet was great for Adventure riding.
The big problem with helmets is you don’t know what they are like until you actually use them and if they catch the wind or are whistling you are stuck with it.
October 15, 2010 at 6:54 am #188978Thanks Bill. I will try on some mates helmets to see the difference. Who makes the M2R and is it a motocross, adventure or road helmet?

Cheers JimWind noise is best dealt with using earplugs, special ‘moulded to fit you personally’ ones are available but expensive. I use the disposable ones I nick from work.
Make no mistake the wind noise will deafen you, I have industrial deafness and I reckon its from years of riding. The level and the length of exposure are the factors both working against you on a motorbike.
My helmet is a Arai xd or somthing like that, its an expensive dual sport type and its still noisey. I also use earplug speakers to my MP3 and listen to music while I ride, it is distracting at first but it helps and the right music can get you in the mood…
I have not used goo but I believe it can unbalance the wheels.
I hope this helps
ScottOctober 15, 2010 at 11:28 am #188996thanks Scott, first thing is to get some ear plugs and see what difference they make
October 15, 2010 at 12:46 pm #188998Gyday Jim, I use the goo and it actually AIDS balancing
and beats the shit out of fixing a flat on the side of the road

October 15, 2010 at 11:05 pm #188999Thats good news, I was worried I would have to change the tubes if I had stuffed up putting the goo in. Do you have problems with the goo getting into the tire valve, and if you get a flat do you spin the wheel them pump it up or just pump it – and whats the best pump to take? thanks

I have a Mini pushbike pump that does a pretty good job goes into my bumbag.

Custom ear plugs $65.00 have bought plenty of them for my son, dogs ate a few hes lost a few but they seal good, as we use them for water. And you can get a string molded into them so you wont loose them.CSR use them and i think the mines use them. But i agree withn llewdaert they cost heaps if they go missing….

Cheers JimJim I purchased a higher screen for mine almost straight away it fixed the problem. Holding your head in anything other then the natural postion for long periods will only result in a sore neck, not a good idea
I have tried my M2R helmet and found it very noisy
so I only wear it on the XR in the bush

October 16, 2010 at 8:53 am #189008I rode 250km on TBs Tenere today and I can vouch that the high screen is the go, we had gusty cross winds all day and it was fine.
I have a screen on my DRZ that isn’t as high as the Ten and it is way harder on your head and neck at speed. -
