AnonymousAn exhaust with a Japanese name but (supposedly) made in Italy?
I have from a reliable source that only the Wings and Akrapovic exhausts ever gave any real increase in power for the KTM’s. Admittedly the conversation was with regard to a later model bike.
$300 seems extremely cheap for a full system. They may look good on the outside but it is very unlikely to be a decent quality steel and the welds could protrude into the pipe causing turbulent flows and pressure drops etc. Pipe bends may not also be mandrel bent which will also restrict the flow of the exhaust.
I’m sure it will make your bike louder, I question whether it will go any better.
Just my 2c

Yeah I am with moto, expect for the part that only Wings and Akrapovic exhausts increase power on a KTM, I am sure others well made well known brands would as well (unless the dealer that told you only sold Wings and Akrapovic exhausts and then its probably true
)
You get what you pay for, thats my 3 cents worth

AnonymousUmmmmm….no. It was by the guy that runs the Coastal KTM High Roller Team and he doesn’t even sell Wings. There are also dyno plots that a few guys had done on DBW that indicate the same thing. It’s as much info as you’ll ever get without testing all the different exhaust on the same day, same dyno and same bike (which, let’s face it, isn’t going to happen).
April 23, 2009 at 11:29 pm #130369So no other manufacturer can make a pipe that works on a Kato, interesting, doubtful but interesting, I cant argue with that, I with draw from the discussion then Steven

AnonymousThat’s not what I said. I said that none of the other mainstream ones like Barrett had any power gains worth talking about. But you are right, let’s not hijack the thread
Sorry XY
April 23, 2009 at 11:50 pm #130387Hi Jacking, at OBT where

April 24, 2009 at 1:14 am #130315click it you know you want to!
(( yay u can let go of my rear guard moto i can ride all by my self now! ))
there’s a guy ( soleriderWR250f , PM’d him with link to OBT but no reply yet) on TT with a muffler on a ’03 wr250 reckons it’s ok.
$300 for a complete pipe i’d be tempted, but have not seen any for a 640 yet, so my money’s safe for now.

AnonymousWell, it’s your money mate. Looking at it from the flipside, it’s only $300, so if it’s totally crap you haven’t just lost $1200
Good work on the linking too, you’ve gone from crawling to running all in the same day!
April 24, 2009 at 2:06 am #130316Yes well the welding quality is in doubt until you actually get one and inspect it. as was raised in the TT thread.
i’m going to have a crack at a set of stainless headers and connecting pipe someday. to eliminate the joins in the pipes and maybe increase the diameter 1-2mm. then look into getting a muffler.

AnonymousThat’s the way to do it, bit by bit. Or save some cash and get a bad ass system

April 24, 2009 at 10:23 am #130461I bought two of these mufflers from fleabay years ago for my WR400. I only bought them cause they were cheap ($160 delivered) and the White Brothers can that was on it was way to loud.
I kept one standard and it was quiet enough and the other I opened up to what was inside. I found from memory two or three cyclinders of perforated steel and at least one restictor. I modified the insides to increase the gas flow and it made it a bit louder and seemed to increase the power a little.
The welding inside was pretty crappy looking. If you seriously need/want more power I have seen some KTM guys put the SX cap on the standard muffler and they rekon it works.
