A day of mixed fortunes was had at the HVMCC Enduro Cross yesterday. Our day started with Connor getting ready at the track and yelling out to me “Hey Dad, where are my boots?” At this stage I could have choked him, as it meant I had to do a mad dash back to Wauchope to get his boots, that he was instructed to pack on Saturday night. I arrived back in time for the practice session so all was cool. Then Taylah pipes up and says, “where is my neck brace? And I only have one glove”. At this stage I should have loaded the bikes on the trailer and gone home.
Anyhow, I managed to borrow some gloves etc for her and all was good. Both kids came back in from practice and were singing the track’s praises. The club had incorporated some of its MX track with a couple of enduro style loops thrown into the mix.
A few Old Bulls were there to have a go too, Gassit, riderX, Dave,Ridehery, Jay were all having a red hot go at the over 35’s.
Ridehery was up with the front runners all day
RiderX just pipped Gassit at the finish line
Dave,(The rider who led my birthday ride on the Saturday) ripped it up all day and was only troubled by a bloke on a CRF250
Gassit raced well all day considering he was having second thoughts after the sighting lap.
Connor was racing well on the recently regeared KX and was up there chasing a podium when he had a moment in the bush and careered into the scrub,he was unhurt and rejoined the race without loosing a place. Unbeknownst to him though, a chain of events was set in motion. His little foray into the scrub had dislodged a hose off his water pump and by the time he made it back past the spectator area the little KX was red hot and I could hear it rattling as it went past. He made it another 200 meters when the bike decided to give up and stop.
His day was over as the bike had no compression and the engine was toasted. Bad luck had come into play.I pretty well had the shits for the rest of the day as that engine is not that old and I wasn’t looking forward to doing another rebuild on it before Xmas this year.
At least we still had one bike running and Taylah was out there giving all she was worth and by my calculations (I haven’t seen the scores yet) I think she may have come in 4th in her class just missing a podium but blitzing all the other girls riding in that class. Puddle’s young bloke Justyn rode well in that class and finished with a well deserved 2nd place over all.
Some pics from the 65 and small wheel 85 class.
Taylah about to hit the Tabletop
Getting some air time.
She is building her confidence with every race and getting a bit cheeky, looking at the camera.
Gassit’s daughter Abbey went well for her first race after she got over her nerves.
With the presentations done, we headed home and no sooner did we unpack, I had the spanners out and got stuck into the KX to see what damage was done.
It appears that the damage isn’t too bad and it looks as though ,it has only fried the rings and scuffed the piston. I could see no evidence of the piston nipping the bore as there are only some minor scuff marks below the exhaust port.
As I said before the piston and rings are toast.
It had gotten hot enough to melt the plastic gasket on the power valve actuator cover
I will get a specialist to check out the bore today to confirm that it isn’t just wishful thinking on my behalf that it is OK. With a bit of luck I will only be up for a piston and rings and a gasket kit.
October 24, 2010 at 9:08 pm #189515It was a top day. all the kids rode very well & seemed to enjoy it. bad luck for Connor & his bike. Hey dad will fix it that’s what dads are for  . Although after hearing about what Connor had done I was getting a bit worried about Jamie’s KX as she had hit a tree & snapped her shroud on the radiator side so I made a quick dash out to the start line to check before her bike race started & all was good.

October 24, 2010 at 10:09 pm #189523At least the kids had fun Mick, and that my friends is the main reason we do it( and the chance to live vicariously through our kids exploits…..
)
WTF is it with KX hoses, if you remember Brentons did the same thing a while back, tore the hose in half.I got away with new piston and rings as well, looks like you will from the pix
October 24, 2010 at 10:52 pm #189526Yeah, I have just been up to Mudntar and showed Rod the Barrel and he pointed out that what I thought may have been grooves in the nickosil (due to poor light in my shed) is actually a small bit of aluminium from the piston adhered to the bore. He said I should carefully sand it off with a fine wet and dry and jam a new piston and rings in and she should be good to go.
As TB said, I seem to have taken a bullet to the leg and I may be able to walk it off. Nice analergy
October 24, 2010 at 11:11 pm #189517My son all ways forgets stuff too Mick, i feel your pain……
October 24, 2010 at 11:19 pm #189529One thing I noticed when I pulled the top end down was the engine mount bolts that connect through the head seemed to have a white powder on them similar to electrolosis which made them hard to knock through, would something like never sieze be of benefit there?
October 24, 2010 at 11:34 pm #189518I use coppercoat on any thing similar.inc axles, head studs, chain block adjusters etc.

October 24, 2010 at 11:53 pm #189519No probs Mick its the same as all the other antisieze its just that it has a copper colour to it.
Just had a look it’s distributed by Caltex and says Jet-Lube Kopr-Kote.
October 25, 2010 at 1:43 am #189538Alot of engine fastners end up with that white corrosion, I think it is the zinc coating reacting with other dissimilar metals, I use antiseize and regular silicone spray to dissuade it, although I don’t think it has any great dretimental effect in the short term.

October 25, 2010 at 2:46 am #189520Yes Mick it was a good day yeterday for the kids but not so good for your wallet, I feel your pain I really do, and yes your girl is a little cheeky monkey ….looking at the camera when she see it….what next, a wave maybe.
Gassit’s girl, Abbey is going well, she only got her license through me a little while ago and she’s looking at ease out there, cant wait to see those girls at it next season, I think there will be some disappointed boys
Puds, its good to see your boy listen to the tips given, (not like his old man) and its good to see him achieve and looking comfortable on the bike…..(not like his old man)
We had a great day yesterday, both boys rode well, got results, all bikes undamaged, all bodies unhurt….except for an elbow and hip scrape…. all good
KTM at the front AGAIN !!!!!!
Sorry TB I couldnt help it
October 25, 2010 at 3:48 am #189546That’s right, sorry Dave, I forgot both your boys kicked arse and rode really well. Both boys on the podium would make you proud.
October 25, 2010 at 7:34 pm #189551Just spoke to Eric Gorr in the States and the new “slug” (his words) rings and gaskets etc are on their way.
The barrel goes to the engineers for a tidy up today. So the Green Meanie will be up and firing for the next race meeting in two weeks.
October 27, 2010 at 12:31 am #189600I dropped the barrel off at a well respected engineering company in Port who’s owner happens to race bikes and he had a look at the barrel and said” No worries, that’ll clean up OK” I then asked “how much”. His response, “How’s $15 sound?” Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.
