That is all I can say. The thing was running sweet as and was going like the clappers for about an hour, untill it blew the bigend, which in turn took out the F@*King brand new piston with it…
For Fu3ks sake!!! Got out of it cheap my arse. F@8K I hate shit like that.
If anyone says anything smart, I will jump in my car and come and punch you in the neck.
Oh well it is only money, time and another lesson learnt (albeit an expensive lesson)
November 11, 2010 at 8:22 pm #190557Sorry to here that Mick. Hope you can get it fixed before the next sprint.
I have just got the little YZ up & going again new bottom end & a few other modes. Greg from the club gave me a hand & has the thing running sweet starts 1st kick. Just waiting for the new swing arm bearings & it should be ready for the next motocross. Justyn can’t waitOn a other note I do have a 06 KX 85 bigwheel for sale
November 11, 2010 at 8:47 pm #190559Nah it wont be up and running for the sprints unfortunately, maybe for the last round of the MX if we are lucky.

Well I am not afraid of being punched in the neck by you Monty (cause I dont have a neck, because you are old and crusty and you wont travel to kew  ) so I will say ummmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Are you fielding questions?
TB
November 12, 2010 at 1:28 am #190588Am I fielding questions??
Only questions that wont incriminate me or make me out to be a bigger goose than I am.
November 12, 2010 at 1:42 am #190589Goose could be a little hard, maybe  Maybe you sharing your “whole” experience could save someone from doing the same. I mean I couldnt save you from doing it, when I rang you and asked you would have only been down a base and head gasket $30 tops but you wouldnt belive me I felt. I was 15 when I did it and tried to save you doing it, now you can save everybody else doing it. Roles reversed I am sure you would like to know. Then you wont feel so bad for you ringing me going “you f*#king jinxed me you *$(#” can be like you saying sorry to me for calling me a *$(# when I was only trying to help you
Just a thought

November 12, 2010 at 2:01 am #190592I suppose, if it helps someone else I will admit to what was possibly my mistake, that lead to the failure of the bigend bearing.
TB asked me had I cleaned the crank case after the previous piston failure.(after I had already finished rebuilding it)
I hadn’t cleaned it out, it didn’t even cross my mind to, as soon as I pulled the barrel Off I jammed a rag in the crank case and didn’t give it a second thought.
As it turns out,the previous piston failure, due to an over heat, has dusted the bigend bearing with particles of piston and ring etc. This dusting of particles and my subsequent failure to flush out the case with diesel or the likes, could have very well caused the catastrophic big end failure the engine experienced after only one hour of operation.
It embarrasses me to admit I didn’t even think to do it, considering I did a 4 year apprenticship as a mechanic. I went for the quick, cheap option and now it has bitten me on the arse and wallet. Especially after my wife came into the shed the other day and saw the bike in pieces and asked “do you know what you are doing?? My reply to her was ” of course I f#@ken know what I am doing”.
Another expensive lesson I have learnt the hard way.
I still believe TB jinxed me. He is to motors as what Boony is to the weather
November 12, 2010 at 2:03 am #189521Mick – Respect to you mate…
November 12, 2010 at 2:48 am #190593I didnt jinx you Mick. STOP SAYING THAT!!! its not my fault OK I didnt know you had the bits to put it back together mate. The first I knew was when I saw the post that it was back together. I have had to pull engines I have built apart before because of parts recall etc (before they have been finished) over the many years I have been building them and I know how it feels. I really felt when I spoke to you the morning after you posted it was finished you just blew me off, I wouldnt just mention it for kicks it was important. I have generally made all the mistakes at work and personally
so if you can learn from my mistakes at least then they haven’t been wasted

November 24, 2010 at 11:25 pm #190596The saga continues
I split the case on the KX
and spotted this.FAAAAAAAAAAAAARKKK!!!
It appears that 3rd gear has seen better days, with the hard facing all pitted.
A quick ring around for prices.
IN Australia $168.00 for the gear
In another country on the other side of the world the same part is $74.00 plus freight. about $15.00
Ummmmmmm what do I do??? Stay on my high horse and support outr local industry or go to the dark side of the earth and save $79.00 ???????
No doubt the gear it runs on will also need changing at a similar cost.
Handy tip number 1.
I saw this in a magazine some time back. It saves you from buggerising about working out what bolt goes in what hole when rebuilding.
November 24, 2010 at 11:39 pm #189522Looks a nasty mate
November 25, 2010 at 12:06 am #191381I love handy hints we can all learn from others mistakes

Nice handy tip Mick
Handy tip number 2,
When its suggested to strip the engine before you order the parts because you could need more parts? (3rd gear was given as an example wasnt it? ) then you will only need one parts order, no extra freight or waiting for extra partsThen tip 3 doesnt matter
Handy tip 3 most importantly
STOP RINGING ME AND SAYING YOU HAVE JINXED ME AGAIN LIKE YOU HAVE DONE TWICE NOW WITH THIS BIKE you rang and asked advice LISTEN next time   Bring it up to Coffs and we will go through it with a fine tooth comb over a stubbie mate and maybe we can educate just a few of us
Will be a good prop to show the peeps how a gearbox works and shifts actually
