BTW the only 2 stroke I have owned was a 1982 YZ 80 J when I was 10.
A 450 4t and a 250 2t in the shed would be the go. Flip a coin to decide which one to ride today.

Would love to have a ride on one!
Current KTM250SX 2T makes 49.77HP :woohoo: :woohoo: . F#%ked if I know which ones is quicker around a track (I don’t race anyway) but I know which one would give me the biggest woody,
There is a push in the US to allow 250 2T to race with the 250 4T. This is obviously being blocked by the big Jap 4. By the look of the below article its already happening at a club level over there. Intersting read.

Thanks Scotty, that article was a really good read. Totally makes me want to go buy a 250SX now and hit the track and scare the sh*t out of myself! :woohoo:
August 21, 2012 at 11:10 pm #228242I love watching this, he’s just having fun :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:
August 21, 2012 at 11:19 pm #228246The 39.55 for the 250F will be crank HP while I reckon the 250SX is wheel HP. Assuming they’re both flywheel HP the SX has more than 25% more power than the 250F
If you’re fit, can ride hard and have a loamy track I’d put my money on the 250SX. When grip remotely becomes a factor the SX will be harder to put a decent time on and will require more effort and energy to put the power down.
2 strokes are certainly fun to ride.
Razzle, it actually doesn’t take much to turn your bike into a 300SX. I had pretty much done those mods to my bike.

Or one that you have to strip stuff off/add stuff on, change tons of settings etc each time you want to go trail vs track?
A happy-medium could be good, more like a bike set for Enduro Cross rather than set for Trail or set for MX/SX specifically.
August 22, 2012 at 2:28 am #228255Nah, I just did mods to make it better on the trail. I fitted a higher comp cylinder head which beef’d up the bottom end, fitted an SX CDI to help it rev a bit quicker (still not like an SX as the flywheel is much heavier on the EXC), jetting to suit.
I also had an FMF SST Pipe and Powercore II silencer which gave it a bit more eveywhere. Not long before I sold it I also dropped the cylinder 0.1mm which changes the port timing to provide more bottom end too. The reduced squish clearance also helps bump compression. It ripped, but pulled really stroing off the bottom just like a 4 banger.
Still sad I sold it……..
August 22, 2012 at 3:13 am #228175I thought it was all about emmisions and the 2t with oil in the fuel just did not fit the bill. seems crazy to talk about eviro friendly stuff and racing in the same sentence.

August 22, 2012 at 6:44 am #228262Obviously too much bike for too little Moto
Haha just kidding Moto.

I wanna ride that track too! :woohoo: :woohoo:

Just felt like a change again and I did miss the 4 bangers. I miss whatever I don’t have. The Berg is a great bike and I’m liking riding it. It’s both more fun and less fun than the 300 in different ways.
Not mixing oil is awesome. Better fuel economy is awesome. More open trails and tar sections are much better. I can mono (a little bit) on the 4 stroke. The extra traction and mad torque is awesome. Smashing through the rocks is better than bouncing over them.
The weight isn’t awesome and as much as I thought having the engine braking is a good thing I think I prefer not having it. Did I mention the weight?
All round it’s easier to ride, especially when the going gets slippy. A decent rider will punt a 2 banger through the slop as good as anyone else, but, I’m old and decrepit so the lazy boy option with 566 cubes is how I roll now
September 4, 2012 at 5:32 am #228337Fact- old mr SHonda had a philosphy of fourstroke, it was his personal and business model preference, go back to the early 80s, oval piston GPs bikes, twin rods, monstrosities, but still he persisited. Then in the late nineties yamaha used road and F1 technology to build the YZ400F rev monster, the FIM was lobbied by primarily Honda threatening to pull out of all sanctioned events, the old foggies at FIM and AMA took a dive and aquiesed to the pressure and the rule were dictated by Honda mainly so power and capacity advantages were blatantly in favour of the 4T.
a little push marketing and violia the market follows.
now go and adjust your valves and change the oil and filter lads.
BTW 4Ts should make noises like THUMP THUMP THUMP Not Whizz Scream Wirr crunch.
and they are both fun.
