Most new bikes have a dual ignition curve mounted via a switch on the handlebars. My KTM has one too although it’s not handlebar mounted you can get a switch and play on the move.

Agree with TB, can’t see how/where a surge would cause an issue.

It’s still a long way off from a YZ though. They have different cams and flywheel that makes a big difference as to how and when the power comes in. YZ cam profile is much more aggressive:)

I have an 04 wr 450 with a vortex X10 and yzf cam. Is it worth me finding this grey wire and doing the mod or am I better off leaving it as is. FEZ.

Do the grey wire mod I say :P If you do it properly as explained above you can easily change it back if you don’t like. It’s free and easy, what have you got to lose?

If anything you bike should responde better as you have the YZ cams to comliment the new ignition map :)

If these bikes are F.I. then the system generally have 2 maps. Open Loop and closed loop. The Huskies have a setup whereby you cahnge the Lambda sensor and fit open pipes, the bike then atuo switches to the race loop. the O2 sensor is the big part in it. A mate of mine has the CRF 450..it too has a wire mod similar to the Yammie.Made a big difference to his CRF. I often wonder if My 610 has the same set up, even though its carb mod. the wiring and Ignition pack is the same as the EURO version which was F.I…If the maps are preprogramed in the CDI part , then it stands to reason that I should be able to do a similar Mod? ( with my great lack of knowledge..I foresee my bike staying as is though)

 I know where you are coming from moto but if I hav a Vortex X10 already will there be anything gained from the grey wire mod. I know I could physicaly do the mod but basically i don’t understand what the mapping does. Fez:unsure:

Although we have called the Handlebar Switch “MAP 1” and “MAP X10” the type of power
delivery produced will depend on what has been programmed into the ignition.
    For example in the
case of big bore engine such as YZ250 or a CR450F we have one main power setting in “Map 1”
switch position and a range of smoother power delivery for slippery track conditions or race starts in
X10 switch position 2- 0. (Only Accessed when the handlebar switch on “MAP X10”)
However in the case of a small bore 2 stroke the CDI will typically have programmed the best overall
Power Map in Position 1 with a variety of different power settings ranging from low (X10 Switch
Position 2) through to high (X10 Switch Position 0).
NOTE 1: Use a small flat blade screwdriver to gently rotate the X10 Switch. This is a plastic
electronic switch and therefore must be treated carefully. Any agreed warranty will be void if the user
    has physically damaged the switch.”

The above is quoted from Vortex. I’m no expert on this but it states above that the X10 works in conjunction with the ignition map. On this basis I would still try the grey wire mod.

As said before it’s easy and free to do so why not give it a go :)

Just checked my bike and I think it may already have been done. The wire they have done on my bike is blue, I don’t actually have a grey wire in that loom, might be a Aussie bike thing. FEZ. mapping_wire.jpg

I can clearly see that you don’t seem to have a grey wire, and I don’t know much about Yamaha’s but I do know that the Ozzie ones DO have the grey wire for sure, I watched a guy trying to play with before a ride at the instruction of a more experienced Yammie owner.

anyone know of a similar mod for the older ktm 640’s?

i reckon put a swithch in it, but hide it.

if a mate says that thing goes! and wants a ride, flick the switch back to normal,

then they say it dosen’t “”go the same, then tell them it must just be you’re a better rider!;)

Splice the sheath on the HT cable going to your sparkplug and run a ‘jumper’ wire upto to your nose and affix to the skin in between your nostrils with a crocdile clip (don’t forget to apply moisture first). Crank the bike over and ride like holy hell with your extra burst of energy.

    Don’t say I never help.
