    Good afternoon

Wondering if anyone could point me to a solution for sorting my NX650 suspension? I’ve just recently removed the forks and shock to get them serviced by my local mech, however before doing so I though I should investigate what I could get done to sort the suspension for my weight (a tick under 100k’s   :( :( ). I’m getting the old girl ready for some extended travel (with about 20kgs extra camping gear) and suitable for gravel road and a bit of trail and erosion hump work as well (not too much though as it’s a pretty heavy unti to start with  ).

    Cheers

    Hi Goldey,
Welcome to the site mate, we have some NX650 nuts here and the suspension guru aka, Nick from Tekniks.
How about you jump in and do an intro and tell us a bit about yourself, and about your travel plans, it could help us help you, plus it’s the polite thing to do ;) B)

Yeah hi Goldey. I started ADV riding on a NX before I handed it on to become a scrapper. A great bike and Nick knows his way around them for sure. I am sure he will tune in as he is the only person here I am sure that knows what you will need for it

    Welcome by the way ;)

Thanks guys, I might give Nick a ring tomorrow and chat directly as I’m keen to get the suspension sorted sooner rather than later.

I put a quick intro up as well

Forks are easy. Springs and emulators.
Stock shock is a non adjustable 40mm Showa. It has really limited preload adjustment and takes a odd spring. Can rebuild it and hunt down a spring. If you can wait a while an aftermarket shock is a better answer

Thanks for the advice. Any particular aftermarket shock? I’ve seen Hagon, Hyperpro and Wilber on overseas markets, but none the wiser aside from brand and most seem to suggest a progressive spring is the go rather than a linear rate spring. Like most I have a limited budget though I’m not young or foolish enough to think I can get “everything for nothing”. Any or all advice welcome.

If Nick can recommend a aftermarket shock I would be interested and so would Moose’s brother John. Nick did wonders with my forks, it is a pity the rear lets it down now. I already have an after market shock in mine but it is pretty how do you do. It is made by an English mob called AVO, maybe it could be rebuilt?

Decided to make the best of my stock shock, but with a coil to suit my weight. The only aftermarket shocks I’ve dug up were the Ohlins, Wilbers and Hagon (in that order of quality I think  ).

    Nik

I’ve decided to let my local mech handle the suspension work, but he will be getting in touch with you to supply him for the correct weight springs for the forks and the replacement coil for the back. Hopefully in the next couple of days you’ll hear from Brad at B&C Motorcycles up here in sunny Newcastle :silly: :silly: .

    Ian,

The shock spring is a special order, will take 2-3 weeks to be made, fork springs might be as well, depending on rate required.

The shock I’d use is a Yacugar, similar product to an Ohlins/Wilbers but at $750.

The AVO is rebuildable, they are OK, on par with a Nitro or Bitubo. better than stock anyway…

    Thanks Nik

I’ll be settling for new fork springs to suit the 120kgs and the shock spring only. I’d love to do the emulators as well, but the new shock will have to wait till the original expires altogether. Budget is tight getting ready for the APC Rally calendar.

    Cheers

    Ian
