February 20, 2011 at 3:58 pm #197081Is it just fond memories or is it the no one rides 250 four strokes anymore. Could it be that most riders are now on a 450 or bigger that the old XR 250 seemed like such a singletrack weapon?

No STM, the XR250 would turn on a 5 cent peace. They were always regarded the benchmark to other bikes when it came to singletrack and tight cornering. They had a relatively low seat height (low COG), shortish wheelbase, and more than enough power in tight single. You could get the throttle on harder, earlier in a corner and just hold it on hard. They would hook up without wheeling, jumping out of a rut or swapping all over the place. I have memories of racing cross country were I could turn inside other bikes in places were there really wasn’t really room for two bikes.
I also used to race club grass track on the thing. We had open capacity classes which was fun but frustrating on the XR. I would pass 2-3 bikes in a corner only to have them blast past me on the next straight. Then I would pass them in the next corner, they pass me on the next straight. ๐ ๐
This humble little machine has taken many victories, taking down much more race orientated bikes. The modern 250 four strokers set the bench mark now but in tight single were power is not an issue my money would still be on a well setup XR250.
PS, I have a Vortex duel curve ignition system out in the shed if anybody is interested. I believe it fits all XR250R from 96 on.
February 21, 2011 at 5:42 pm #197020I bought a 2000 model about 2 years ago, ‘hotted’ and tidied it up a bit, was a top little single-track machine, got left behind on the straights a bit but was awesome fun to ride.
Also got a 83 twin carb 350,(resto one day) and a 600 in the shed…
If only Honda had put a ‘leccie’ leg on em, where would we be now????Cheers

Can it be done legally? It is not safe as it quickly drains the battery after a bit of slow work on this bike with no kick start.Does anyone have experience of trials tyres on a xr250, particularly Pirelli mt43, but any trials tyre or 80 / 20 off/on compromise?

With the tyres, lets assume I’m gonna use Pirelli MT43’s with HD tubes.
What else should I do for puncture protection.Anybody fitted a smaller front sprocket to a xr250.
Standard cog is 13 tooth (I think). Stall speed is too high.

I want to be able to crawl.I purchased an SW Motech Weather-Proof Rocker Switch from Motorrad Garage.
It cost me approx $30 however itโs an excellent switch.
I used it when wiring up my VisionX Solstice LED driving light kit.
I canโt see it shown on their website link below at the moment however I am sure they could order it in for you or they may be awaiting a parts shipment.

April 21, 2011 at 1:04 am #198680I had an 89 250 I got second hand in 94. Bored it out to 280 and Ballards did a big fin head for me. I fitted Cartridge Emulators and a progressive rear spring, Ballards seat cover.
Great bike except for the rear drum brake. Oh and the Ballards exhaust tip!
They were the days, Ballards XR’s Only. My brother even bought a 95 one direct from Ballards(which he still has).
Terrific bikes with no real problems to look out for, other than the usual wear and abuse issues.
They were the bike referred to as the best steering bike for years and years in the bike mags of the day.

I’ve recently started riding in enduros over here in the UK and here’s a shot of me racing the old girl a few weekends ago in May 2011.

i have just purchased a low mileage secondhand XR250R 1995…do you have any info or recommendations about carby rejetting and air filter etc ???
June 9, 2011 at 2:21 pm #202233Ring Ballards regarding jetting. It depends on the muffler you are running.
Air filter is all the same basic things, keep it clean, oil it, and use a quality one.
