I thought it would be good to start a thread where we can share things we have learnt or been shown over the years. They can be bike set-up or general riding tips or anything that makes your riding life easier. It would be easy to get off track here so I have put this in the Tech Help section so keep it relevant.

I will kick it off with two I’ve learned.

    – If you run a bar pad a great place for your rego sticker is to stick it to the underside of the pad cover. It is protected from the elements and is at easy reach should you need to show it.

    – You are getting changed after a ride and realise you did not bring a spare shirt. Take off your jersey and put it on backwards. It is normally only sweaty on the back and it is much more comfortable for the drive home.

Regarding the rego label, I have mine laminated and zip tied to the top of my RHS fork leg. That way they cant get you for not displaying the label.

I’m not a 100% sure were my rego label is :S

I like TB’s idea of the vice grips as a gear lever, it’s going to get you back to the car quite well, I now have a pair in my bumb bag.

I do the same Mick only on the left fork but I read somewhere that it is not legal. Having said that I have been pulled over before with no rego label, I just told the cop that I don’t put it on because it is too easy to lose it inn the scrub and too hard to replace it and he was ok with it. These days they can get on their in car computers and look up the rego anyway.

Under your bar pad cover is a good place to store cable ties.

    Sorry Read LHS.
Cant see why it isn’t legal. It is displayed on the LHS of the vehicle as it states on the instructions. He would have to be having a bad day to book me for that I think.

Done the same. That is where the piece of hacksaw blade I carry came in handy. We used it to cut the tree branch to make the plugs.

Speaking of plugs, a spark plug fits the sump plug hole on a XR400 in a pinch if you loose it. (will get you home)

and a sparkplug spanner can be used to extend a broken brake or clutch lever (saw it done at Sofala last year)

Cut the leg out of your missus old stockings and use it as a cheap filter skin (make sure you wash them first).

Cut a piece of plastic hose the length of you bars and stick it inside your far bars. If you bar end plugs are easy to get off then you have the perfect storage place for a siphon hose.
