I mention in my last post that I could hear a strange noise after doing the clutch work on my XR, well I have narrowed it down. I can only hear the howeling noise, kinda like a truck in the distance dropping in revs but a little more howely, when slowing down in 3rd gear when the revs drop. I have read alot on the net about the 3rd gear issues the XR’s have but from what I’m aware the bike was rebuilt only a few thousand kms ago and I only hear it when slowing down. Could this be a result of too thick an oil in her, used 25w-50, or is it the first signs of the dreaded weak 3rd gear?

Yep sorry syco you’ll need a full rebuild!

Mate wouldn’t have a clue but I’m sure the XR Xperts will be in here soon giving you all the advice you will ever need.

    Cheers
    Chris.

It wont be because of the oil

I would run it for around 500kms and drain the oil remove the oil filter and pull the filter about looking for metal.
If theres no metal thats a start, if there is chances are its the hard facing from 3rd gear and its breaking up fast. I could be wrong but I always thought the problem with 3rd gear was the dog?

It depends on how bad the noise is to how fast I did something about it. Some noise no metal and not jumping out of gear no rush ;)

Metal noise gets worse jumps out of gear do it straight away :(

Do you have a magnetic sump bolt? Might be worthwhile installing one next time if you don’t.

Thanks for the answers. I will check the oil and filter next change. Austblue I don’t have one yet but I will invest in one. Do they have a magnet in the bolt or has the bolt itself had a magnetic charge added to it?

I am pretty sure that they have a magnetic insert in them. It will freak you out when you pull it out and it has a metallic affro on the end.

Yeah I could emagine. Would give a better view on how much wear and tear goes on inside a motor. I’ll defenatly have to get myself one though.
