Not that I want to start a bike war (so I will avoid using Honda as an example) but how many KLX450R’s do you see on an average ride compared to KTM’s for example? You would expect that more people moan about issues with KTM’s as there are lots more people riding them.

Funny you say that because from memory Yamaha WR outsells everything in Aus but every ride I go on seems to be awash with KTMs. Wonder where all the WRs actually go? I keep an eye on all things KTM and have to say most owners I know that have a reasonable relationship with their dealer do pretty well out of KTM warranties.

Yeah, the last stats I posted months back showed that Honda were up there too. Go figure.

Depends on the stats you look at, overall bike sales or sales for specific syles of bike. Overall dirtbike is Yamaha then Honda but this would incorporate all there models incuding farm bikes and kids bikes not just WR and CRF.

In the Enduro sector the Banana is top seller for first half of 09 with 841 units.

KTM have 3 models in the top 10 enduro sellers with Honda only having 1. It would be safe to say KTM sales would be up with Honda and Yamaha in true Enduro models not just trail bikes as KTM have a much larger range of Enduro models.

Must be getting pretty frustated by now Mal?

My quotes were based on enduro models as we went through the same argument you have just put forward.

That’d have to be skewed by the DRZ400E wouldn’t it?

I knew you’d pop up and read that!!!
We have talked about this before. I didn’t get papers with mine either (no body has). I’d be surprised if the Husky dealers gave anything too?! I’d say that if you contacted KTM Aus you would be able to request warranty info in writing. I’d say they would have to. The problem you had was out of the ordinary. Your the only person I “know” who had a big issue with warranty at a KTM dealer. To play it safe we can agree that there are more happy KTM owners than unhappy wrt the warranty.

i often think the warranty service has a lot to do with the dealer i am not the only one to have warranty problems with that particular dealer yet found another dealer of the same brand that would bend over backwords for you pity he does not sell ktm s anymore but

I have just read a readers letter in the latest Trailrider Magazine. The letter is on page 12 and is headed Unhappy Husky Owner. Makes for an interesting read regarding customer support etc making Mal 5.1’s case seem maybe not so isolated

Well I have the Husky back now. It took 10 weeks!!!!. I ultimately had to force the issue by sending a letter of demand (by email) to Husky asking for a new bike or my money back, since they were unable to supply the part that my bike needed and could give no indication when that part could be supplied. That prompted an immediate response from Husky, especially the way my assistant writes letters. They wouldn’t approve a new bike or money back but assured us that the bike had the highest priority to be fixed.

Husky took 3 – 4 weeks to approve the warranty and only then could parts be ordered. I phoned the dealer every 2 two weeks and got a ‘we’re still waiting for the parts’ response. After my email direct to Husky and a few phone calls, Husky dismantled a 2010 bike and sent the parts needed for mine overnight and the bike was fixed within a couple of days. No complaints there, although I don’t know why they couldn’t have arrived at this solution weeks beforehand.

I’m still happy with the bike just not the ridiculous delay by Husky in supplying parts. I think the dealer could have pushed a bit harder but they are a business and are very busy. Still a courtesy call every now and then would be good customer service. To Husky’s credit, the guy we dealt with there was extremely helpful. Once I took up the issue with Husky directly the issue of parts to repair the bike was sorted within a couple of days.

The bike is going well with no noises and feels a bit stronger than it did before it failed. I don’t know if this is because I haven’t been on it for 10weeks?

Is Husky warranty lip service? Well that’s up to the individual. They approved the claim and fixed the bike, just not in a reasonable time. So, apart from the unreasonable delay in fixing the bike, at least they did fix it.

Great news Mal, as far as lip service goes……the jury is still out on that one.

As with any warranty there are requirements to keep the bike under warranty as such

BMW do a 70hr service on their 450 that is worth over $3500 and has the crankshaft replaced

Your Husky Mal has to have its piston replaced every 850kms? or 1000kms to maintain the warranty, cost of that piston I know is being questioned as we speak but even if it’s not the $520 that we think it is now its still and incredible cost every 5 or so rides I think. And that’s only the piston, does it require main brgs or something as well? I have also heard that Husky want the bike servicing has to be done by one of its dealers for the warranty ( I have also heard some dealers wave that requirement)

I was told KTM require the services to be done by a licensed bike mechanic?

These are just examples of different manufacturers warranty requirements. As the length of the warranty for the bike goes up so does the cost of keeping the bike in warranty to the owner, this cost is so the manufacturer can afford the warranty.

Is it a lip service? To my way of thinking its like insurance for the owner and the manufacturer, you pay to have it looked after if there is a problem, they have you pay them in case there is a problem. We pay insurance and never make a claim and end up thinking if we saved that money would we have been better off??

For example you would think the 3 and half K in the BMW case would go a long way towards the rebuild when it is worn out.

If the piston price stays at $520 for the Husky, well I would think a Wisco piston would have to be good for 4000 to 5000kms saving over $2000 towards its rebuild.

Read the fine print gentlemen and read in carefully

Lip service isn’t a good name for it, expense insurance maybe

I understand what your saying TB.

I was told by the dealer that any licensed bike mechanic can do the services.

I was told that the piston was about $300 and that’s how much the first one they sent was, I just happened to be a 250 piston. I’m not keen to pay $520 again and will be getting prices on other brands and taking it up with Husky again.

If I ever buy another new bike I will be asking for a copy of the maintenance schedule for the term of the warranty and getting prices for parts in writing.

I do wonder if this happened at say the 20th month of the warranty period wether they would approve it.
