Sorry if this is a silly question, but what is a Pony Express?

A pony Express is an enduro style race around a marked circuit through the bush. You enter as a team of two and each rider takes turns at doing a lap of the circuit and the team with the most completed laps after 4hrs is deemed the winner.

You can do do it with either both riders riding one bike or two bikes.

    Cool. Thanks for that Mick.

    Sounds like fun

Hey Nick, I think they will run a sprint series there later. There is a whole heap of rigmarole they have to go through to get the track licenced by MA as well as a DA approved by Council as it is an all new track.

It’s been talked about for months now and the good news is that it’s on…

HVMCC while hold the Mt Seaview Pony Express, 11/12 September, 2010.

Ralph Clissold has kindly opened the gates to his 7000 acres at Mt Seaview for the event. A few members have been busy in recent weeks (along with Ralph and his tractor) setting the course, let me just say that if you don’t ride the event.. your nuts. The weekend I was up there Ralph slashed 7km’s of grass track and more work has gone on since then.

So the event… The format is a 4 Hour Pony Express, so for seniors that means you ride in a two man team or you leave your brain in the toolbox and ride Ironman. The juniors will ride as individuals for between 1-1.5hours on a shortened course, just like a Pony that we would hold at the Club track.

IT IS A TWO DAY EVENT. The reason we say this is because we have decided to run the sighting laps on Saturday. Sign on will start at mid day on the Saturday and everyone will be given the chance to ride their sighting lap in the afternoon, if time permits we will allow everyone to ride two laps during the “sighting”… can I remind everyone at this point that you can not win a trophy on the sighting lap….. should I say more?

So if you choose to not come up on the Saturday, you will not get a sighting lap on Sunday, thats because the event starts on Saturday!! So for those that want to whinge, save your breath. Juniors will be first away so for the seniors who are unable to finish “prepping their bike” on Saturday night, there will be time to get yourself sorted in the morning before you ride….

Saturday night will be a “social night” for all. For those that may not have been to Mt Seaview the area we will be using is known as the “bunk house”. The facilities include a 60 bed bunk house (so you just need a sleeping bag), 2 self contained cabins that can hold up to 12 people and powered/unpowered camp sites. The deal is “first in best dressed”. You need to contact Ralph and book what ever you choose… The rates are crazy cheap so ring Ralph and get in early to avoid the front seat of your car.. Ralph’s number during the day is 65877188 and at night 65877144, word is the phone is in melt down so get in quick.

Day Licences… There is a lot of interest in this event and people are coming out of the woodwork to ride, if you need a Day Licence (you don’t hold a Club or National race licence) you need to let us know. You don’t have to do anything other than send Kris Bignell an email telling her that you need a Day Licence. The Club has to buy the Day Licence books and they are $400 odd bucks a book. If you need a Day Licence and don’t email Kris first then you could miss out and that means, you get to watch. Email Kris at race-secretary@hvmcc.com.au

If you have any questions please email Kris at above address or myself at vice-president@hvmcc.com

Looking forward to seeing you up there.
    till then, elbows up!

FINAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR HVMCC Mt SEAVIEW PONY EXPRESS, 11/12th September 2010

The long awaited, greatly anticipated Mt Seaview Pony Express is set to roll in just over a weeks time. I hope to try and answer any questions you might have by posting the following,

WHERE : Mt Seaview Resort (also known as Jaspers Peak)
    40 mins west of Wauchope,
    Oxley Highway
If you have not been to Seaview before, traveling from Wauchope go through Long Flat township, then Ellenborough and continue west, you will come to a new “re-sealed” section with nice fresh armco railing waiting to catch our tar burning brothers, AS SOON AS THE NEW “HOT MIX” SECTION ENDS, TURN RIGHT. You will see signs saying, Mt Seaview, Mt Seaview Rd, Jaspers Peak Etc. You can’t miss it, (although I have seen some of you get lost on 80 acres).

Ok, follow the road into the resort, over the causeway and stay to the right, Do not go to the main office at Seaview, we are trying to stay out of their way. At the the top of the hill, the road turns to dirt and you will come to a gate with sign “Seaview Homestead”. I should not need to say it but, “bushies rules” apply to all gates on the property, please leave them as you find them, open or closed! Enjoy the sights as you pass the homesteads, staying on the dirt road to another gate, 600m from that gate you will find the bunk house and camping area. YOU’RE THERE

WHEN : The event is a 2 Day event, sign-on and sighting laps on Saturday, Racing Sunday. Sign on will start at 11am, we have been asked to keep sign-on open to allow some who work Saturday mornings to get there, so at the very latest, 2.30pm sign on will close.
We ask that if you have junior riders coming that you have them signed on sooner rather than later so we can get the sighting laps underway.
The sighting laps in order will be, small juniors, bigger juniors then Seniors, then we will repeat the process.

Everyone will get two sighting laps.

Those who know me can sense the frustration when I say, “THE SIGHTING LAPS ARE NOT A RACE”. I’ll show you the trophy table for the sighting laps at riders briefing and you can have a guess what will be on it. You get lost on Sunday and you only have one person to blame.

RACING will start for the juniors at 8am SHARP Sunday morning with no sighting laps. Seniors will start at 11am SHARP.
1 Hour straight for little Junior, 1.5 hours for bigger juniors and yes….
    4 hours for the seniors.

WHAT : There are a few things to cover here, Firstly the camping, you need to have booked with Ralph Clissold (see previous web posts) for the bunk house or camping.
The camping area is going to be “cosy” if we have the numbers we expect. So please keep that in mind as you roll in on Saturday.

Raplh has kindly offered to put steaks and snags on the BBQ saturday evening, B/egg rolls Sunday morning and steaks/snags for Sunday lunch so bring your pocket money.

The Course… I have been getting phone calls asking “will little Jonny be able to ride it”… The answer is “if he can’t, he will have a fun time trying”. The whole idea of the weekend is to have fun, Roodsie, Fulvio and others have done a great job in setting the course which I reckon is a cracker. That in mind we can’t keep everyone happy, the little juniors will ride a shortened course which is basically a giant grass track, rest assured there are no killer hills that will see kids in tears (unless they get lost). The senior loop should see you around it somewhere between 15 to 20 minutes depending on how much the blue ribbon means to you. And yes, without rain it will be dusty. Remember dust is just dirt without water in it!!

For those still wondering what a Pony Express is, you bring a team mate, you do a lap then he does a lap, or do two laps then he does two, there are no hard rules in that respect.
You must only change riders in the control and to add to the true Pony Express concept, no outside assistance other than your team mate is allowed in the control area.

COURSE CUTTING/GETTING LOST. Over the years I have seen and heard just about every excuse there is. If you cut the course, the lap scorers will drop that lap off you…SIMPLE. There will be plenty of sweep riders keeping an eye on things and lets hope nothing comes of it..enough said. If you find yourself so focused on the title that you get lost, for goodness sake please take care coming back onto the course..again enough said. We don’t want to hear from someone wanting average lap time for getting lost, you get lost on Sunday and we all know who raced in the sighting lap.

COST : Bunk House beds, Camping etc to be booked and paid through Ralph Clissold
To ride the even, Juniors $25, Senior $35
One Day Licence for Senior only $55
If you’re not a Club member $10 for the day

The whole idea of the event is to have a great time, a good ride and a social night round the fire thrown in. A big thanks to Graham Roods, Fulvio and Kris Bignell for their efforts and of course Ralph Clissold for having us there. See you there on Saturday morning.
    regards
    Protty
