Yep. After reading so many trip reports where just about everyone has headed out there I thought I had better see what all the fuss is about.

Plan on leaving home (near Orange, NSW) 21st July. Drive with three mates in a Patrol dual cab (conversion) ute to maybe Lyndurst where we will join up with some SA mates of a of one of my mates. Very matey indeed. From there head off on bikes with the Patrol in support. Head from west to east around to Birdsville then down south again into to badlands, then back home.

I will take my DRZ400e which I got from an Old bull (Thanks “J”), another two DRZ’s, WR450, and a ‘Berg. Not too sure how the Berg will go but we will see. One guy just wants to drive.

    So thats the plan.

Am I organised with 14 day (2 weekends) left to go? Nuh! Not even close.

Got to make some racks for the DRZ to hold the Andy bags.. Why you can’t buy these off the shelf has got me f****d.

Get SA desert pass ($125) DONE.
    Splice in 12v socket.
    Put on big tank.
    Maybe get screen.
Work out what gear to take.
Clean swag and sleeping bag. Ie get spiders and mice out.
Work out how to use my Garmin.
Make sure guys at work have enough to do while I’m away for 2 weeks.
Practice doing tyre changes and a spare rim and old tyre.

Oh yeah and service the bike.

And do all this on a tight-arse budget.

Hey, that’s great news. Good to see you leap into this without over complicating things. It’s amazing how many riders think of all the reasons why they can’t do it or the “what if’s” that could happen. It’s the most amazing experience being out there. Enjoy every moment with your mates. Be safe.

Great you have 4×4 support as it makes the riding easier and enjoyable if you can offload some items. The ute helps in collecting firewood. Wonderful experience.
With my andy bags I used a standard rack and wooden plywood sheet to bolt the bags to the frame.
I use 20 litre water jerrys as inserts and rope handle. These double as buckets / seats as well.
