Last couple of road rides i.ve done down to the shops I’ve noticed the indicators stop working after using them once or twice. Turn the bike off and back on they go again for a couple of go’s. I just got back from Vicroads and while pulling in, turned the indicators on and “nothing”. Not a good look. Anyone got any ideas what the problem could be and where to start looking ? The bike is a DRZ-400.
My theory is its probably because of the power its producing melting the wiring.    :S
March 18, 2010 at 5:57 am #173638Better chance that you’re out of blinker fluid than overpowered

Are the other electrical components continuing to work? Is it the front and rears or one or the other? When you say they aren’t blinking do you mean they’re coming on but not flashing or not coming on at all?
Perhaps try bypassing the flasher unit and see if that’s the fault? I’d be leaning towards getting a multimeter and working my way from the stator backwards. Could be your switch wiring also?
March 18, 2010 at 6:05 am #173644Thanks Blue. All other elecrics working fine although there is a noticble diming off the headlight when the blinkers are turned on and dont work. The blinkers dont come on at all. I’ll try the flasher unit first.
March 18, 2010 at 6:07 am #173645sounds like an earth/ loose connection, as they work on and off.
check the globes and sockets for water or rust.
and as AB said top up your fluid while you’re at it
March 18, 2010 at 6:18 am #173647if you head light is dimming sounds like a short from a bared wire rubbing on something.
try it while turning your front wheel from side to side, see if it narrows down where it could be.
March 18, 2010 at 6:29 am #173649Could be a shorted wire or a short in the flasher can?

March 18, 2010 at 6:31 am #173648maybe it is you blinking every time they come on
na, its an earth issue for sure, keep it simple.
unplug all the indicators. turn the switch on and plug them in one at a time. if it doesnt work still unplug again and try another one. if it starts working, its gotta be in one of the indicator stalks (water or something) if it still doesnt work, check the wiring to see if its shorting on the frame somewhere, specially behind the headlight, (turn the bars with indicators on and see if it makes any difference. then id find the flasher can and replace it.it will be something simple. like everyone else has said, i just explained it a bit simpler for you, coz i know how super intelligent you are big fella
March 18, 2010 at 6:45 am #173650Thanks all. Problem solvered.

One of the front blinkers must be R/S. I unplugged the blinkers and put a test lamp on them with no problem but once i plugged the right blinker in it went to shit.
Thanks for keeping it simple. I may not be smart but i can lift heavy things. Oh that reminds me i have to go pet the rabbits if that all right George.

now you can pet the rabbits
March 18, 2010 at 7:26 am #173653I followed you the other day and they were working then they weren’t then they weren’t then they were then they weren’t then they were then they weren’t then they were then they weren’t then they were. It could be an intermitent problem.
March 18, 2010 at 7:41 am #173655what are indicators??

When Mick signals like this he is telling you you are number one, if Ollie does it they may be some confusion so thats why he uses indicators.
