I have noticed that especially in the USA at the moment it is a buyers market on Ebay and through other online facilities, eg: i just got a quote of $173 plus shipping for 2 complete topend rebuild kits with gaskets, bearings, seals, pistons, rings, and pins for both of our bikes off a large American outlet. Now normally I would support our local lads, but that is 2/3rds the best quote I could get domestically for ONE kit, so it is 1/3rd of what it would cost me otherwise for both and in the same brands, now they didn’t have these listed at those prices, I emailed and asked for the best deal they could give and Violia, at least 30% off their currently advertised prices, these prices are actually better than what the manufacturer sells directly for, so cash flow must be tight in the recreational bike arena there.
Meanwhile I picked up one of the branded piston kits domestically off a bikeshop on Ebay for $160.00 (YZ250P) with free postage, so even here things are tough for some sellers. So if you need a few bits ‘n Bobs for your Cycle I reckon now is the time to negotiate, and while I fully support our local Blokes where I can, a 66% savings for the exact same brands cannot be overlooked.
Now I get to freshen both the bikes up at once without bursting the piggybank.

June 24, 2009 at 12:06 am #140815OEM parts Bruce??
June 24, 2009 at 12:12 am #140819Better Mick the people who manufacture the OEM stuff for the bikes.
Coulda got Wiseco for a knock ’em down drag out price as well, but i don’t trust the lad to thoroughly warm the bike up enough for a forged piston  . I know i proably wouldn’t have at eight “yeah pipes warm, radiator’s warm let’s go” is enough for him lately.

June 24, 2009 at 12:20 am #140816You are so right Bruce, I get about 4 emails a day on average from local and overseas shops with specials, it is so a buyers market
I bought knee braces last year for $660 delivered from the USA, the same braces here at the time where $1190
I got a serve from a bike shop owner because I bought them overseas and not local, I explained the price and that the same braces he had for sale where $1190 before the dollar went to 95cents and the price remained $1190 when the dollar was good. he blamed the importers WTF I asked had he spoken with the importers and he walked ofI note with interest this week the braces have gone up and when I asked an employee why, I was told because the dollar was down?? How does that work??
I support my local shops that help me and OBT members and they do a great job, like those boots Battyes have on special at the moment, freight taken into account they are cheaper.
Sutto’s have a great special on IRC tyres at the moment and they can freight they cheap, speak with Mal and tell him Greg from OBT sent you
Battyes pivot pegz deal is another great example of a local shop doing the deal for us
I think bulk buy items are the go, be it whatever we want Moto spoke about even doing an insurance bulk deal once, as a group our buying power would be huge.
I know a group of guys that set a date to save towards and all buy from a shop in the USA and combine all their orders on the one shipping bill and save themselves heaps, they bought neck braces once for $380 each because it was a bulk buy and the same braces here retailed for $600 +

June 24, 2009 at 12:33 am #140821Blue I’m considering putting a new piston and rings in mine do you mind telling me the seller?
KTM want $450 for it
I was actually just reading today that KTM aust are the ones to blame for our redickulous prices. I bought a PDHS and the seller had to buy the risers to complete the kit and they were $90 for the two 9mm spacers!
I’m looking at a leatt brace now and its $500 shipped from the states or $800 locally. No wonder Aussie companies are suffering they’re not competing on the global market available to us!
June 24, 2009 at 1:20 am #140817Hey AB,
here are 2 i found googling.
i know your not fond of the idea of a big bore kit, but it was all i could find with a quick search, as i knew who sells what as i have looked for big bore kits before.
however it gives you an idea on prices though.

I support the local motorcycle outlets where possible. My wr450 was jumping in and out of top gear, a common problem I have since found out. I diagnosed the problem to be rounded off dogs on 3rd and 5th gear pinions. I approached 2 well known bike shops and was quoted between $2500 and $2800 to fix the problem. So with this in mind I found the parts I needed from the US
GEAR, 5TH PINION $20.68
GEAR, 3RD PINION $46.00
FORK, SHIFT 2 $31.77
FORK, SHIFT 3 $35.58
SHIFT SHAFT ASSY $22.32GASKET, CYLINDER $4.51
GASKET, CYLINDER HEAD 1 $25.47
GASKET, CRANKCASE COVER 3 $7.97
GASKET $4.44
GASKET, CRANKCASE COVER $2.99
OIL SEAL $6.00
OIL SEAL $3.88
OIL SEAL $2.86
GASKET, TENSIONER CASE $1.07Total US $215.54 + freight about $30.00
With the money I saved purchasing from the US I also replaced all the bearings and the piston and rings. A full engine rebuild for under US $500.
As a business owner I support our local businesses in OZ where possible, but sometimes it is hard to justify the extra cost purchasing locally.
Another example is I purchased a new set of gaerne SG10 Boots for under Aust$250 delivered to my door. The cheapest price I could get in Oz was around $600. Also a new Bell moto8 helmet US$79.00.
Cheers Glenn
June 24, 2009 at 3:13 am #140841And just to fuel my theory, I just bought a set of full Alloy bars 10 minutes ago in the unusual KX60 Rise for $20 new, usually can’t have them for love or money as they are a rare/weird setup the shop owner got them as a clearance special so he passed it on to me.
Empty the warehouses to get cash flow healthy and turnover happening would be the thinking around some suppliers methinks.

Hey Mr Austblue, Scottys has them for $275 for your bike which is a reasonable price for a stroker compared to the KTM OEM price isn’t it?
June 24, 2009 at 4:45 am #140847Yeah agree to all of the above I am searching high and low for parts for my project YZ80s, can get from states at a fraction of the price compared to aus, Yes we should support the locals when possible especially our sponsors, but we don’t have a yamaha dealer as a sponsor yet.
Chris.

You are on the money there Mr Blue as per usual.
I am in the wholesale business and our lead time fromm ordering product to recieving it is 5 months. When the economy slowed and consumers kerbed their spending our stock continued to flow in as per forecast. The forecast generally comes three months before order confirmation so that is a massive 8 months lead time. Even at best case scenario it is like turning off the tap and having the water continue to flow for five months before stopping.
Australian businesses are over stocked and that means one thing in the old supply demand equatiuon. The buyer wins!

Bugger that an eight month lead time to guesstimate the fickle trends of consumers. I also think that wholesale discounting and price drops do help stimulate the economy as part of an overall approach, for instance I spent $40 more than I planned to at the bike shop yesterday and it may only be a few bux here and there, but a 10% rise in sales figures or stock turnover would be enough to kickstart the whole economy into confident mode again. We believe or not are doing it easy here compared to the other players in the global system, we have good sound business and political leaders on a whole, and the Australian public are not given to mass panic like , …oh say the Yanks.

June 24, 2009 at 11:39 pm #141008To true Blue. The real problem lays in the governments scare mongering which has in effect created a bigger impact than we may have seen otherwise. If people are told by those in power that the economy is doomed and we are in for some hard times this will have an affect whether the info is real or not.
Tell people that nuclear holocast is inevitable and they will build bomb shelters, tell them the economy will be in trouble, they stop spending.
We need to live in our own reality and not in the back pocket of the Seppo’s. Rudd can give out all the money he likes but when he is also telling us to brace for hard times ahead what message does this send?
Australian wholesalers can not afford to bail out the country by stimulating spending by cutting their own GP but this is what is happening and it may see sound business’ fail purely beacuse of some badly chosen words by those in positions of power.
