I finally got around to pulling down the WR426 after it died very quickly while I was warming it up. When I pulled off the tappet cover I found the timing was out. The cam chain tensioner was not pushing hard against the guide. The book said that if it did not have a smooth action to ditch the tensioner. There was no spec for the spring or anything to see if it is working as it should. I re timed the cams and checked the valve clearances. Two exhaust tolerances were closed. All the rest were fine. I filled it up with fresh oil and It started. :woohoo: Is there a chance the valves could have survived meeting the piston???? When I ran it it certainly sounded just like it did before the stop. I am at least going to try to fix the closed tolerances and could go the extra step and remove the head. I don’t want to spend much money on it as the bike is not worth it.

Sounds similar to my old KLX problems after the Nabiac ride
It too had two exhaust valves closed,,, I just reshimmed (actually ground them down on an oilstone) and away she went ;)
Installed correct shims when I got them and she ran like clockwork till I solds it a few months later :)
    Good Luck

Did your klx drop a valve eags ? When this thing died it sounded like when you stand on a chicken and pull its head off with your bare hand :o. Not really but it didn’t sound pretty ;)

No mate, just closed up completely on the two exhaust ports,,,
Thats on the Nabiac ride when it was 40 odd degrees flogging it into the wind trying to keep up with the pack to get to Krambach :S
Then wouldn`t look like starting once it cooled down. I also had the cam chain tensioner housing that cracked and was spewing out oil  Thats why I opted for the lift home with the seppo (Krusty)

New cam chain tensioner installed ($120)and the valve reshim ($6.80) and all was sweet ;)
