i have no idea what year.
the frame number has been filed off and no compliance plate  supposedly theft recovered by a previous owner and had the Vic viv done. Victoads today didn’t indicate that anything untoward with the bike is current.
if i had have picked up the bike in person it would have been left there.
all the info i know is it’s now premix. and is legit. but i’ll have to see what MRS has to say about no VIN. in Vic. you apply for a new vin and once cleared/accepted they give you one aling with a new compliance plate to fit.
anyway i premixed some fuel. checked for spark and connected some power to the batt. the power valve motor does a check cycle thing when you turn the key on and also when you stall it.
kicked it a few times and she fired into life. warmed her up and took her for a short ride. the little 195cm3 engine cracks along even dragging my bargearse along.
all i have to do now is sort the dints in the pipe. work out where the tracking issue is. front wheel to forks or if it’s a frame issue.
August 28, 2012 at 12:31 am #228503I reckon it’s a 1984. Get the engine number and use the Googlebot and you’ll find the exact year. Your handlebars look bent in the pics.
August 28, 2012 at 2:23 am #228519thanks Moto, but as far as i can work out going by pics on the net. it’s an 89-91/2.
engine number search on the web proved in vain.
84-85 had the pipe out the opposite side. and drum rear brake.
http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/yamaha/yamaha_dt200r%2084.htm86-87
http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/yamaha/yamaha_dt200r%2086.htm88-89 states rear drum but shows pics with rear disc. but pipe now out the r/h side. correct colour scheme.
http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/yamaha/yamaha_dt200r%2088.htm90-91 shows a nice pink and white DT200WR model with USD
http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/yamaha/yamaha_dt200r%2090.htm92-? shows an increase in displacement to 199 via an increase to bore size. and addition of USD forks.
http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/yamaha/yamaha_dt200wr%2092.htm
then this site jumps to the 230
interesting in the list there is a DT 125 Tenere
i don’t know how accurate the site is. but it’s the best i’ve been able to find to date.
August 28, 2012 at 3:37 am #228520Yeah, you’re right. I looked for pictures of a 84 and it looked similar. Looking back to the bike pictured wasn’t an 84, it was some other text in the page was 84 so the pic was wrongly Googled!
Don’t forget the site you’re looking at is South African and models and years from there to here may well be different. Colours of plastics etc…..
August 28, 2012 at 3:46 am #228522It’s an 88/89 DT200R Moto your losing your touch mate.
August 28, 2012 at 4:33 am #228523What touch? I wasn’t even 10 years old when it was made and I know nothing about vintage sickles!
August 28, 2012 at 5:22 am #228524thanks Axel
and Moto, for trying.
Axel do you know what changes were made to the engines etc. of these bikes. as in interchangeable parts?
one site that listed wossner std. and oversize pistons stated that they fit all DT 200 models.
another listed conrod kits but there were different manufacturers and had different notes on what year model their kits fitted, but others said fits all years.
but mainly wondering about cases, clutch packs, reeds etc. that kind of stuff.
one chinese seller on ebay us had a ‘stainless steel’ piston  :pinch: translation is a laugh at times.
the speedo stopped at 34something000km
so i’m guessing the old girl would have had a piston and rings at least in her life time.
what would i premix at? some sites with members owning DT’s say 40:1… sound about right?
thanks again for the input to date. it’s been very helpful.

I wasn’t even 10 years old when it was made and I know nothing about vintage sickles!Your doing up an IT I thought you might have something going? That IT was made before you were born then?! I wasn’t that much older than you at the time and managed to save up for a second hand KDX200F1 that was the DT’s nemesis. The KDX was the better bike despite the magazines’ objectiveness.
August 28, 2012 at 11:45 pm #228559My IT is a 1980 model, I was born in 1979 so it’s almost as old as me. I only about my model IT as I’ve been looking for parts and info on it.
XY – Have a look here for the 89-90 DT200 manual. It also has the 91 manual so you can download that and compare parts.
Also, sign up at http://www.yamahait.com.au, they have a forum section specific for the DT200
August 29, 2012 at 1:24 am #228571I’ve suggested that forum to XY last week. He needs to get in there and read up on the threads in there. RodeoBob is the DT master. There is at least a good weeks worth of reading in there to get up to speed with the DT.
August 29, 2012 at 7:31 am #228580thanks for the manual Moto.
3CJ = 88/89
i didn’t pursue the Yama hate (how i first read it  ) as when i looked you had to join to get past the basics. and thought it to be an IT based site. not knowing they had designated YZ and DT sections.
i’ll buy you a beer Axel in lou of the thanks button
once i’m on the lower mid? coast and settled in next year some time. and you can make it down for a ride. Batemans bay area anyway.
