What is the best way to fit the joining links on O ring chains. I can never get the retaining clip to fit with all the O rings in place and usually leave them out of one side. Even then I tend to stretch the clip, last time I bent the backing plate trying to press it on far enough.

May 27, 2009 at 1:46 am #136679i use a small pair of pointy nose pliers (locking ones)and press the outer enuough to get the clip on one end at a time, pain in the ass but worked for me.
im gettin a tool 15 bucks saves sore fingers:)
cheers TBMay 27, 2009 at 1:48 am #136740You can make them easy enough, cause the ones I used to buy would bend and strip the metric fine threads in the bolt, so about 15 yrs ago i made two out of H/T and H/T imperial bolts, drilling was the most difficult bit, but use the right drill bit and all was good, gave one to me best mate and still use the other.

May 27, 2009 at 1:49 am #136741I have an awesome chain tool that does the job on chain sizes from 400’s right through to 600’s. Supplied to me by KTC tools of Japan.

May 27, 2009 at 2:12 am #136750I can explain it here and now Ollie, small piece of heavy wall channel in 45-50mm inside, drill and tap hole to suit around 5/8th H/T bolt in exact middle of channel, drill small relief hole in opposite wall to allow rivet to seat, grab said 5/8th bolt and drill hole in centre
Can email you a rough diagram now if yu send me a PM with addy

May 27, 2009 at 2:32 am #136757I use small modified vice grips – PITA
Ollie you better make a batch so we can all have oneMay 27, 2009 at 2:48 am #136758i do believe jeffro is talking about the clip style chain joiner not the rivet. Ballards make a mini off road chain breaker and link press, they work well and are very small (matchbox), but they are $50. the o ring joiner that costs $14.50 is rubbish, it bends and the thrad strips, dont bother.
