I have one of those chain breakers from Balards. I tried using it to press the side plate on but when I push on 1 pin it doesnt close up on the other one enough to get the clip on, and when I tried it in between the pins it bent the plate before closing it enough to get the clip on.
I just ordered the joining tool (after reading your post) so hopefully I will have better luck.
Thanks all for the tips.
May 27, 2009 at 3:18 am #136759KTC chain tool. THe DUCKS GUTS of chain breakers, this is what I have and it will set you back about $AU450.00.
Here it is in action.
May 27, 2009 at 9:02 am #136762If you’re talking about making a press-type setup to squash the plates on before fitting the clip Ollie, put me down for one as well. It’s been so long since I did one:blush: I think I use vice grips and held my tongue this way.

Me too for 1 if you make them Ollie:)
May 27, 2009 at 9:16 am #136801I had a fairly interesting experience putting my new chain on when I learnt how to fiddle with the buggers a bit. Just make sure that the bushing is sitting nice and evenly spaced before you put the joining link on or it’ll be very hard if at all possible to get the clip on and it’ll jam the o ring and reduce freedom of movement.
I use vice grips and a tent peg placed between the bushings to make sure I squeeze the backing plate past them.
Chain breakers are definitely a great advantage.

September 14, 2009 at 10:49 am #136832Ok as promised I have just finished making a dozen “O” ring chain press. I made them from 6mm heat treated steel so they should be strong as. I used them as a training aid for my boys at work to get them familiar with some of the machinery (mill and vertical drill press) and Hand tools (taps and die) and a bit of an insight into basic metalurgy. Those that have indicated that they want one are first on the list, so probably means there is about 7 remaining. These are all individually hand made and will be a must have in your toolbox. If you want one they are $20 each plus postage if recquired ($6 postpac satchel anywhere in aussie) I will be able to deliver to Louee
sorry no pics yet but I did a trial run and it worked pretty good
sorry if I have forgotten anyone
People who have indicated they want one are
TB
Moto
Ktm rat
wickedbeemer
Shanevor
blue 450
white rocket
xytransit
ECKS
Thirsty
