Good stuff Ollie. Great general trail bike the DRZ is.
A friend of mine bumped into the guy who bought his 2000 model DRZ just the other day, that bike has now done over 30,000K’s (mostly road but some dirt as well) and it still hasn’t needed a valve adjustment!
My 06 model did 13,500 fairly hard dirt K’s (with some road) and was still in original new spec. when it got sold.
I’m convinced the only DRZ’s that fail are the ones that dont get looked after properly and/or get totally flogged.

Yeah they all seem as reliable as an axe, keep the oil and air filters clean should be good to go. Dave just rang me and rego for 3 months is $72.50NZ and a warrant of fitness is about $30 cant go wrong.you are also able to ride on the beaches over here if it is regoed:laugh: I saw another one on trademe it was $1000 ono but had no photo and the timing chain needed doing,so it was probably flogged rounding up sheep, the guys user name was Farmboy :laugh: and he had no rating, maybe good for spares!
cheers ollie

December 23, 2008 at 9:15 am #115846Oh yeah, 2 possible issues with your model Ollie;
1 get a manual cam chain tensioner if it doesn’t have one already
2 find out from the previous owner/s if the primary drive nut has been locktightened to the tension recomended for the 06/07/08 models (98Nm I think).
If that nut comes loose it’s “goodnight motor”.Apart from overheating they are the two things to be concerned about.
Newer models (04 and on) had bigger radiator inlet & outlets but a good coolant and pure water will put the boiling point up high enough for NZ riding.December 23, 2008 at 9:25 am #115845Trailboss wrote:

dont know what its like in gisborne.. but its raining cats and dogs here in hamilton.. makes for interesting riding on the clay based tracks

:laugh: :silly:All time favourite would have to be the RMX250 closely followed by the husky 360 (this is my third 360)I also have a 07 Gasgas 300 that I have recently purchased and it amazes me how versatile it is.I guess I prefer the two strokes for the majority of the riding I do which is tight single trail.
we had good steady over night rain here, but the sun is really out today. Dave I had a look at Kiwi biker last night it has some info on the different tracks around the north Island which is really good. Even the organised rides a really cheap compared to Aussie,$45 bucks is great value. I think there is a ride on the 2nd near Huntly, I probably will do that oneB)
cheers Ollie

and lastly is it only the actual diameter of the inlet and outlet pipes that require changing? what about the water pump?)I cant see it being a problem over here especially with the touring intentions I have in mind:laugh: any more input appreciated and makes good reading
cheers Olie

The MCCT was about $40 US from Thumper Talk but Ballards might have them now.
You should probably check the cam chain if it still has the auto tensioner on, the auto one was guilty of stretching the chain. You would have to change the radiators to up size the coolant pipes.
I doubt this would be worth while even in Aussie unless you wanted to race the bike or something, I dont think it has been a real big issue at all but Suzuki must have had a reason to change the size of the pipes. Just use a good coolant mixture. -
