Meet up with Theo (Tenere) and his mate Nick (BMW F800) at Berowra Petrol Station on Sunday morning at 8am. It rained all night and the forecast was for more to come. What else is there to do on a rainy day but go play in some mud up at the Watagan’s even if you got the flu.

I noticed two other adventure riders pulling in to get some fuel. They were with ADV Rider – (Ian – KTM 990) and Chris (KLR 650). After short discussion about routes they decided to join us for the day.

Of we set of up the F3 for Palmdale and arrived at the start of Ourimbah State Forest. I knew the first hill was going to be very muddy and slippery. Ian went up first and based himself halfway up to help riders if required. Chris and Nick did some mud paddling to get up but unfortunately or fortunately no one dropped their bikes. Got to the top and headed to Red Hill. Then hit the tar to Yarramalong then dirt road to Watagan’s Letter A. The guys had big grins on their faces already. Turned right and headed to the Basin Campground where we ran into a group of trailriders having a break. One of the guys is a member of Old Bulls – Ivy. Was told one of their riders fell and had a suspected broken leg. Hope they got him out ok.

We headed up Murray’s Run and eventually after some nice flowing and sometimes slippery mud sections got back onto Walkers Ridge Forest Road. I decided to take a detour out to Mount Warrawolong and show the boys a beautiful spot that overlooks the valley and Watagan Creek. On our way back Theo was in the lead and decided to look back to check we were all following when the front tyre clipped a bank and over she went. As taught by many OBTer’s… make sure you get photo’s first then assess bike damage then lastly see if your mate is ok. Well got lots of photo’s. The bike didn’t suffer any breakage but poor Theo ankle was suffering. But like any good Adventure Rider he was back on his bike and hooting up the hill without shedding a tear in public.

Shortly after this Chris’s KLR had a flat front tyre. Ian came to the rescue with tools and Nick pulled out his air compressor. Everyone came together and helped whilst Theo supervised whilst sitting on a rock in pain.

Time for lunch so we fanged it along Wollombi Forest Road to Laguna then to the Wollombi Pub for lunch and rum/coke. Theo’s ankle was getting worse so he decided to bail out and tar it home. The rest of us headed back via Yanko Creek Rd, Murray’s Run then headed down Walkers Ridge Forest Rd to the Pines. This is where Nick went wide on a corner, braked and lost the front tyre and went down. Unfortunately I missed the action but from all accounts it was a worthy drop. The crash bars have a mark to tell the tale and finally his adventure cloths got a bit muddy.

We got to the Pines when the thunder, lightening and heavy rain started. We decided against taking the dirt road to Wyong and headed for Cooranbong so we could get on the F3 at Morisset. The ride down the F3 was also exhilarating with the traffic congestion, pelting rain and thunder show. I think those that I passed in cars felt sorry for us but in fact I was having a ball. Got home, drenched, washed bike, hot shower, checked on Theo, dinner, rum/cokes and felt the flu go further south. Great day for sure. Today… I’m sick in bed.

    Photo’s to come.

    Sorry Iva… spelling mistake!!

Thought it was you guys that we passed again. Definitely tested myself, my bike and the poor guys who had to follow. Not sure if I showed them up but feeling more comfortable on the bike. Long way to go before I can feel comfortable going on an organised Adventure Ride, keep up and deal with any terrain. I hope your ride ended ok and you didn’t get caught in the storm.

I am glad we met at the servo as you had a much better route than I had planned. Under your recommendation I have found and joined this forum. It seems everyone enjoyed the day, even our German visitor Chris, who had his baptism of dirt. He says he is now addicted and wants to do more, which is always good to hear.
    Just some photos I took

Hey Eagle…. sounds like you did a number on your ankle if its still sore. I suspect Theo will be hobbling for a while on his as he couldn’t put any weight on it by lunchtime. I’ll be going out next Sunday and the next one and the next one etc. With Theo down I may need to find another recruit otherwise out on my pat malone. Meet Ian from ADV Rider who just joined OBT (minusone) and Chris so see if I can hook in with their rides. Hope to catch up with you again as soon as your ankle is back to normal.

    Hi minusone,

Welcome to OBT. The guys here are awesome, helpful and on top of that just good blokes. You will fit in well on any of their Adventure / Trail rides.

Thanks for sharing your words/photo’s. Loved watching you going around corners at speed and seeing that back wheel slip all over the place. Need to get some tips on how to do that… Looking forward to sharing another ride with you soon.
