AnonymousThe oen I have is the normal compound Washougal and it has been good. I’d will try and sticky version too and report the difference. The guys at Track and Trail said that there isn’t much in it so we’ll see.
July 10, 2009 at 10:16 pm #143126So there’s different compounds for the different ‘models’.
It would be easy to see with two tyres side by side, twist the knobs on both, then compare that with a trials comp tyre. Not too happy with my stone king but it is wearing slooowwwly.
Might go back to IRC or D952….
Or Kenda, depending on what Moto says next……..maybe
July 25, 2009 at 9:24 pm #135212Washougal maiden voyage was had by 2 of us yesterday with both being quite happy with the feel and how they looked at the end of the ride. We both noticed on some surfaces they had a flat tyre feel and were a bit skaty but could have been due to not worn down a bit knobs (on the tyre that is….us 2 knobs are well worn down  ). I found I could power out of corners on the back wheel quite easily which I think is a first for my bike :woohoo:, and other than rider error felt real grippy and safe on the hillclimbs. JD was on a “Budds Creek” which compared to the “Washougals” looked a little more chewed up but that was an older tyre.

Are there different compounds available in each of the lines (Carlsbad, Washougal & Millville etc)??
yes you can get the sticky or normal compound the sticky being a little more expensive….If so, the old competition rule is: soft terrain – use a hard compound, hard terrain – use a soft compound, not sure till you get there – have a tyre ready on a spare wheel for each possibility.
i should have also mentioned that the millville sticky can be run in both directions one giving you a softer tyre…. re it allows the knobs to flex and bend more.
i have been thinking about this as i have always fitted mine in the softer mode, thought is next time i will run it in the harder mode till about 1/3rd wear then rotate it because i think there will be more than ample hook up in the harder direction as well….
You do have spare wheels don’t you?

AnonymousBeemer – The IRC will be a good choice too but they seem to be real hard to get now.
Although I haven’t run the Kenda out yet (I’ve been away) it has been great so far. As an all round tyre that gives great grip, predictable sliding and good wear for the money you can’t go wrong.
I can’t say anything about the stocky compound as I haven’t tried one and don’t know how quick they wear so I would just stick with the normal one unless your feeling daring

AnonymousThe Washougal is now dead but it had a good innings and offered good levels of grip on every surface even when the knobs were severely worn. It was run at 12-13 psi the whole time and did quite a few road Km’s too.
It will be my tyre of choice from now on unless something else turns up that is better value/performance. I would also recommend this tyre to anyone considering a new tyre.
November 3, 2009 at 8:11 am #135213Mine is still looking good at around 500kms and I am still happy with how it plays on the dirt. I was talking to Ralph last night and he said his is now a slick but he has done a lot more riding and also has a 450x which churns them up quicker than an under ripe banana . I will be happy to stick with Kenda but not a hard choice as the direct from supplier price can’t be beaten :silly: .

I am interested in what you have since you got the 450 18 months ago.
Like you I like S12 rears the grip is awesome but they wear pretty quickly. I know you have tried a MX Scorpion and thought that ok. What else have you used? This is not a smart arse question its just some research I am doing for some up and coming jobs/tests/research projectsTB

I was told IRC got taken over and the new company upped the price so the Aus importer couldn’t retail them for less than $140 ea and they think they wont sell any at that price, therefore they are not going to bother importing them
I bought an S12 from Sutto’sNovember 3, 2009 at 11:31 pm #159385

When I bought the bike it had a Dunlop 739 rear on it (75% tread) which didn’t seem much cop but the wear rate was quite good. At the time I didn’t know any better though. I changed and went to Bridgestone ED12 on the advice from Coastal KTM. Matt had a Dunlop 952 which he reckoned was good so I put one of them for a try when the ED12 gave up.
I then splashed out on several S12’s and kept paying the money as they were good. At your suggestion I went to Pirelli Scorpion then back to an S12 before giving the Washougal a go at the suggestion of Track and Trail and Matt who said it was the best tyre he had tried (he only ever had 3 rears though).
I’ve also now had a decent ride with the Metzeler 6 day extreme on the new bike.
A broad enough spectrum to have an qualatitve opinion on the Washougal I feel.

Inside hook up STM, a mate I ride with is a tyre rep and he can get the odd one here and there at mates rates.
November 4, 2009 at 9:46 am #159486I`m to ruddy lazy to read this entire thread so I`m going with the title..
I have run a washougal sticky 77something 5 on the front of the narny for the best part of 500ks now and it still looks near new, This tyre helped transform a pig into a steed in my eyes, I will be replacing this one wih another when required…Boony`s 2bob worth
November 4, 2009 at 9:49 am #159489Good Boony, its good your happy with it, what else have you tried, by the way the threads about rears I think
