After busting my back a few weeks ago and getting back on the bike last weekend I’ve been thinking about a bit of added protection. I wear a 661 pressure suit that has a back protector but it would really only protect against abrasion and punctures and offers little support.

I’ve started checking out kidney belts , do you think they’d help ? Do they offer back support as well as kidney support ? Which brands are best ?

    Thanks in advance :)

I used to have one ages ago but found it uncomfortable and i didn’t really find a situation so far it would help, But i don’t run elbow or knee protection either so you may like them.

Thanks mate , I was wondering if they took pressure off the lumber area when riding ? Plus you don’t crash Nato so no protection needed hey :D

I think we both know thats not true. Wasn’t it u behind me in bello? haha. I think it felt more like it was forcing you into good posture which in return would give you protection as your lower back is in its best position for taking rough hits like the sneaky times your rear bounces over logs and rocks etc.

    Hey nick,
Doesn’t the 661 pressure suit have a built in kidney belt ? my Acerbis amour does, plus its back armour is a little more durable than my pressure suit.
I wouldn’t say that your an unfit guy mate and i think that might have something to do with you not snapping your back completely and ending up in a wheel chair, maybe good core strength can give more protection than we think.

The 661 suit does have a kidney belt of sorts but it only covers a small surface area , after looking at the specific kidney belts they seem much wider and with more adjustment.

As for core strength , the doctors reckon riding dirt bikes regularly built me up enough to keep me walking and alive :) so riding dirt bikes can save your life ;)

Ive worn one since I tore my liver open in a accident near 5 years ago on the bike. Definatly helps hold the internals together.
Have recently got my hands on a leatt vest+kidney belt. Its like the full pressure suit. But the arms are missing. I was wearing a 661 kidney belt before and had trouble with it digging into my hips. The leatt gear is very supportive and comfortable. The kidney belt can be moved up and down and has a lot of adjustment to make it very tight, but it never digs in.

Being an ADV rider the protection offered by typical adv gear/suit with just the backpad has been sufficient for me so far, mind you I have not had any nasty getoffs in my time in the sport.

A couple of months ago now I purchased a Forcefield extreme harness from Adv moto ,and due to the importers of the products for what ever reason I am yet to receive it. But Janice has rung me today and left a message saying she thinks it will be there tomorrow :woohoo: .

Can’t wait to give it a test run, looks as though it gives heaps more protection than just a back pad, around the kidneys and ribs and I will also be able to wear a jersey in this shi#&y hot weather and take the jacket off.

Force field is great gear James , I’ve had the action vest for a year or so and wear it on home hot laps. It has no kidney belt so I’d be really keen to see yours mate :)

    Thanks for the info !!

I have a EVS pressure suit with one built in, it has four bands of support. I wear it every ride any bike except the postie
It pulls the back protector in tight as well as a bonus

Do you think the pressure suit back protectors actually do anything other than stop scratches , stabs etc ? Mine wouldn’t stop a serious injury IMO !
