AnonymousJust a quick note, I will let the other riders fill in the details.
All up 18 started the ride. Conditions where dry and dusty but just about perfect for riding. Not to hot, just right.
Everybody came away unscathed except Tracy who I believe was sporting a bruised thigh from a minor get off in the first few kilometers. For once on a ride I did not fall off which pleased me no end.
Some bloody fast riders in the group and TB thundering past on the big Honda was something to behold!
Had lunch at Kitchener as planned and then six of the group who had rode their bikes from home decided to head off across the Watagans, 3 to Cooranbong and 3 back to Newcastle including TB who wanted to scope out some trails for next week.
Now I must apologise to everyone. After the road section heading into Abernethy I suddenly realised that I had left my bumbag on the side of the track a fair way back. (Old mans disease, had to stop for a piddle)!
Two of the boys, Chris and, sorry mate, forgot you name, went back and retrieved it for me, a delay of about 20mins. No complaints from anybody so thanks for that.
All up a good ride with a top bunch of people. Thanks everyone.

August 8, 2009 at 9:28 am #147447Al thanks for putting this ride on. And a big one to Glenn for sweeping. I know I’ve done it or something like it with you a few times now but it’s a great social run and it was good to have a couple of mates along (Steve and his son Josh) on their first organised trail ride. They both really enjoyed it even though Steve said he was looking for lower gears that weren’t there sometimes on the DR650!
We rode to the start from Cooranbong along the Sugarloaf Range Trail so we were nicely warmed up by the time we got there and it was good to meet up with some of the names I’ve become familiar with from OBT.
In the “wierd and wonderful” department was the DUST  I can vaguely remember riding in clouds of the stuff all the time but the last couple of wet years have spoiled us rotten.
It’s interesting to note that even though none of the terrain is all that difficult you can use the time to practice up on a few things (today was “on the pegs day..”) and dealing with the traffic of all abilities puts the onus on you to be respectful of other’s fun when overtaking. I’ve had a couple of incidents lately when simple passes I’ve made could have ended in tears when either me or the other rider have gotten crossed up at the wrong moment so I’m a bit sensitive about it I guess.
Anyway a good day out and with it being dry the bike didn’t even get smothered in that grey sticky crap that passes for mud at Sugarloaf.
August 8, 2009 at 10:19 am #147448Well we assembled at Dan’s to ride up to meet Al and the crew
From left to right
Boulder, Chicken, TB and Dan
We rode up to meet them at Sugarloaf which got the blood pumping.
Chicken made one of his rare appearances
Champo wouldnt get of Dan’s bike and there was talk of a new bike while his was there, does this mean he is going to stop polluting the atmosphere and get rid of his environmentally unfriendly two stroke
We saw a monkey and got a picture of his butt
Al gave his speech and said we could pass the lead rider, this was allowed as long as you waited at the next intersection
We left and went here and there on some really fun trails, the dust was pretty bad at times but thats riding isnt it
Dan and I cut loose and ran back towards the road under instruction from old Al, we came across a large mud puddle I yelled for Dan to go the the left side on the blue tooth and I got through, I was through and gunning it when over the blue tooth came ” MAN DOWN MAN DOWN ” Dan had fallen in the muddle puddle and was letting me know
We came across this little jump up, Chrisscrossed got cross rutted and had a moment, I couldnt get the camera out quick enough, but here is a few of the others

We rode around and around and ended up at the Pub
We left the ride there and continued out for another 90kms of sweet single and twin trail, will talk about that elsewhere
Thanks AL and all that went a great job

TB tried to switch off my bike mid-ride but could not succeed! Ha ha TB you cant stop a Beemer that easily
Hey Training Wheels, I like that animated map thingy (every trail), I might see if I can make one of those for the Apex Batemans Bay ride the other week.
The burgers at the pub are awsome, I ate too much.
Thanks again Al, hope the gloves are good.
Beemer.

Which GPS do you use and how do you overlay it to the maps? I am very keen to get a setup for myself so any info would be great.Cheers

s t m,
The Trailmate web site does it all for you. You upload the GPS file to the site and it auto maps it. Couldn’t be easier. I have a 12 month old Garmin etrex Venture (entry level), but older models work just as well. Credit here to Rogerdodger – last year some time I did a ride with him (similar route to what we did here actually) and unbeknowns to me he logged the ride and sent me the link to the Trailmate site. I was impressed so I got myself a suitable GPS. I notice the web site is Garmin friendly, but most models are catered for. Roger’s Garmin is a few years old and it works fine on the site.
What’s more impressive is you can use the Garmin software (Mapsource) to view the track using google earth. Gives a lot more detail. a snap shot is below.
This is why John Liddell and other bike tour operators ban GPSs from their rides.

My left ribs and right shoulder hurt like buggery – dunno why the shoulder hurts but it’s probably from a fall I had towards the end of the ride and I landed on my right hand side. The ribs hurt because of a fall I had in a nice muddy rut sometime on the ride before lunch, and I’ve either bruised my ribs or pulled a muscle when I picked the bike up. I felt a bit of discomfort at the lunch break but it wasn’t until I got back to the car park that I felt it starting to really hurt. And on the drive home.
But otherwise, it was a top ride Al. Well done mate. And it was good to meet other Old Bull and SECT members.
Cheers
August 9, 2009 at 6:33 am #147518Umm I think your mistaken Rodney I wasnt going to hot or hard, you the acting corner-man aren’t in the right spot out on the main track  so by the time I spot you down where you are doing the corner-man and taking my picture I am having trouble stopping its a big bike
Check Dan out, I had yelled to him on the blue tooth STOPPING, TURN LEFT, TURN LEFT.
Later we came over a hill later and I said to Dan again on the blue tooth “stopping turning right” Dan said “ok”, and still went straight ahead into the little gully much to mine and Boulders amusment
It was a lot of fun

sorry gregory. i didn’t realise i was a cornerman then. i just stopped on the side of the track to take some photos and wait for racy. i thought you ran wide and went around the tree and nearly hit me then showered me in rocks. i removed the photo.
