I’m up for a new set of knee guards before my next ride, after my old pair gave me a fair old rash on the weekend from rubbing, not to mention the fact that the elastic straps are completely shagged – and they are in the bin!

    So, what’s good? What’s not?

Not looking at braces, just knee guards.

Teach me oh learned ones! :P

    Hi Ecks,
I am currently using a set of Thor “Force” knee guards, they are about 5 years old and have served me well.
They are worth about $130 and from what I can tell are about the top end of the “guard” market before you get into the braces.

I would buy them again, however my next ones will be some Pod or asterisk braces B)

Sorry ECKS but there are a few here that have learned the hard way lately. I know you said no braces but here is my spin its a subject close to my heart

Buy knee braces, cheaper then a reconstruction ;) You dont have a 3 to 5 month unexpected time sitting around (and self employed that hurts) ;) Protects from rocks and crap as good as guards ;) Bonus they prevent most knee damage it seems (ask the likes of Boulder, Crash and even me) Better to prevent then whine after (dont bother shutting the gate after the horse is out as someguys have sadly found out) ;)
Oh and some health funds will help with the purchase, my Asterisk braces are now over 6 years old and still going strong. Reckon they have done over 90k and over 2500 hrs of the two hour meters on the XR and Teneres (that doesnt count the other bikes I have ridden and there has been a heap of them) . At a klm rate they have cost me about 8 cents per 100kms or 3 cents an hour  Saved me huge once ;)

Oh knee guards alright I heard the EVS Epic Knee/Shin Guards are supposed to be good my nephews wear them and rave about them. Because you read my rant above I found you a link here

Thanks TR and TB, good info there. Only a fool doesn’t listen to good advice. So: What do people pay for knee braces? I know every man and his dog reckons their brand is the best, makes it hard to work out what to look at. Don’t want to fork out the big dollars for a glorified knee brace, but don’t have the dollars to spend on the likes of CTI braces etc.

I’ve had a blown PCL (posterior cruciate ligament) for years and years, result of a bike crash as a teenager, but the doc has said my muscles have held everything together. Most unusual he said! I’m not keen to make it worse though!

    Hi Ecks
I owned a set of the original PODS and they were rubbish. Piece by piece they fell apart within their first year to the point that I chucked them out. They may have improved since.

Cant help but read this and feel my name should be substituted everytime TB refers to learning the hardway. I spent $60 (mates rates) on a good pair of knee guards 4 weeks ago because I reckon I couldnt justify the money for braces. Now I am sitting at home with 5 holes in a stiff swollen leg post surgery and $3,000 (mates rates again) poorer not to mention using up 3 weeks sick leave (love governement jobs) and looking up which knee braces Im now going to buy so I can get back on the bike in 6 months.

Mind you my injury came from an embarrassing slow get off and was just a fuckup, have come off thousands of times and some pretty bigg get offs which I walked away from wearing only knee guards. Who knows what you should do – Shit Happens.

Just to save anyone who is searching for info, here is TB’s write-up on the Asterix knee braces – followed by some general off-topic crap as was the style at the time!

And Delkevic braces are covered here

    EVS braces here

    General comparison here

I thought you might dig those up Ecks ;)

For the $$$ spent, I have been relatively happy with my Delkevics the past few years.
They are showing signs of wear now as the Patella protectors are only plastic and starting to crack where they attach to the rest of the brace body.

I will be looking into something more substantial next purchase,, also looking into whether my Health Fund will assist ????

    Cheers mate

Yeah your right about opinions ECKS. If you can find someone that has the wear and protection I have had out off braces I will burn mine ;) again ask around. Around 800 for a set of asterisk braces.

I couldn’t bring myself to put your name down Snowy (heal fast mate)

I am running the Thor guards mentioned earlier in the thread. They do not offer the protection of a full brace but in my opinion are the best guards by a long stretch. I would punt that they offer more protection than some of the badly designed braces.
There is no substitute for a real brace though so if you are in the market I would take TB’s advice. He has the first gen version and if you shop around I am sure there are some good deals to be had.

Thor Force guards served me very well and I’m sure saven my knees in a few decent offs but as has been already said knee braces close to guarentee the save !!

I have the Asterix cell 2 which are adjustable but I think I would go the gen 1 that most old bulls wear if I had my chance again. It’s great that you can adjust the brace simply but I find as you warm up and cool off the braces can become either tight or loose depending. When riding they stay put but if your helping a mate ( or yourself ) on foot up hills etc they can move a bit. Not enough to be a great concern but the red originals seems faultless B)
