Just remebered that the speedo cable on my old TT600 went on the outside. There was a built in guide on the fork protector that the cable went through on the outside of the fork then came into the connection point.

    Post is over due………

Well this past weekend Krusty got to have a good go on the Banana.. Myself and the OWL’s rode from Bell to Capertee via the Sofala Birthday route except we followed the train line to Capertee from Ben Bullen instead of bitumen then onto Kandos via the train line.. We had lunch at the Kandos Hotel and then bought a few items at the IGA and continued along the Bylong Hwy to Aarons Pass and into OWL01’s property.. Saturday was a great day and the only issue was it rained for the whole route to Capertee. Then cleared up for a great afternoon..

Sunday morning we were up early packed up and then headed back via a different route. The planned route was Aarons Pass Rd to Sally’s Flat, left at Hill End Rd to Sofala then left on the Upper Turon Rd to Capertee.. Since they had 4 days straight of rain when we got to camp site from the Sofala birthday ride it was under water and the road was impassable as the water marker was at 1 meter and the river was flowing fast and furious.. We headed a few K’s back to Sofala and took Sofala Rd to Ilford then down the Hwy to Capertee.. We left Capertee and followed the train line to Cullen Bullen then a dirt rd to Portland.. We then went into the bush at the same place we did on the Sunday of the Sofala ride following the same path.. Once across the Bog Hole we followed the dirt rd to Wolgan Valley rd and went left to pick Blackfellows Hand back to the Bell..

We did 360 K’s over the 2 days.. I really liked the way the bike handled.. The front end was a lot nicer than me XR was but the back end needs a heavier spring I reckon.. I do not like the stock gearing of 14/47 The bike revs way to much once you go over 100K for my liking so I will probably take it to 14 or 15/44 and see how that goes.. I did have starting issues when she was cold.. Every time the bike was cold or cooled down after a 1/2 hour she was very difficult to start.. However I could run along side the bike and as long as there was a slight incline I could jump on her in third gear and she would fire up every time.. Krusty was very frustrated that this was happening..

Besides the starting issue I’m very pleased with the purchase.. It handles so different to the XR and lots of ride time is needed for full blown assessment..

    Cheers…

So Krusty is a little freaked out.. First I didn’t do good enough due diligence to catch the cold starting problem and second it won’t start cold but runs fine once roll started and warmed up.. OWL02 kept saying all weekend that the valves were out and to just throw money at it and let Suzuki sort it..

TB thought otherwise (on the throwing money at it) and we made plans to sort it before this coming weekend.. Tuesday late afternoon TB and Gaz(OWL02) arrived at Krusty’s 4pm sharp for some shed time.. The top cover came off and the engine was set to check the valve clearances.. Exhaust was spot on and no worries.. However intakes were pretty dam close to big fat 0 reading.. So cap up and shims out.. Shims measured up at 2.82 for one and 2.80 for the other.. Next on the phone to Suzuki and ordered shims.. 2.50, 2.55 and 2.60 based on instructions from the chief mechanic.. Action tells me they will be in Thursday lunch time.. We spend the next hour drinking Bundy and throwing insults at Krusty because he is all worried like a little girl… :P :P :P

Thursday lunch time I get a text from Action to tell me the shims are in.. OWL02 picks them up for me and we meet again around 4:30 pm for round 2 of shed time with fresh Bundys.. 2.60 Shims in, top put back together and re-setup for valve check.. All looks good and now sitting dead center on speck range. Rest of top put back together and then rest the tank on, fuel on, choke out and push button.. Fires right up and idles like a wet dream.. After jumping up and down and chasing TB around to hug him (he wouldn’t let me) we drank Bundy and threw more insults at Krusty just because they can!!

To top it all off TB scores me a front tire and whipps rack for the corner for $100.. Too dam cool as a week that I feared was going to be horrible has turned into a dam good one and now I can’t wait until Sunday to get the old girl out in the dirt again!!!

A huge thanks to TB for sorting me and Gaz for his support and courier service…

    Thanks for reading………….

    Cheers…

Your welcome Krusty. Its a very simple job and we should one day do it again with photos and a write for all the DR owners like yourself. Even having to remove the cam chain tensioner, hang the chain and remove the inlet cam if procedure is followed with and ounce of common sense its easy.

Can we borrow your bike when we get back from Cameron’s and do a tech video picture “How to do” segment?

After the corner ride I have now re-setup the Banana back to normal.. Stock Tank and Seat etc.. I’m going to leave the 15/44 gearing and see what happens in the trails.. I suspect it will be all right as I ran taller gearing on the XR400K which I actually prefer, but I may take the rear back to a 47 and leave the 15 time will tell and with coffs coming up I’ll know for sure…

On the corner trip my front headlight assembly was shattered.. Decided to remove the stock shroud and its over weighted bracket mounts… What a pain in the @$$.. I had to remove the forks to get the brackets out.. Dam engineers need to quit smoking crack when they design stuff..

I bought a Polisport Enduro and managed to find a 45 Watt bulb to replace the crap 35w that came with it.. I’m quite happy and its look is a bit sleeker imo.. I know post and thread is useless without photos, but they will come soon I promise.. :P :P

I decided to dismantle my exhaust as some of the boys on the corner trip commented at its nasty crackling sound and it was a bit loud too.. Low and behold there was no packing.. Just a tube with holes in it that ran down the center of the exhaust housing.. I purchased some exhaust packing and and wrapped the tube with one layer and used tie wire to hold it in place.. I couldn’t believe the difference in sound and level.. It is now a bit quieter and the crackling is gone..

Thanks to a top bloke and previous OBT of year I acquired a replacement front rim as mine was cracked and the repair we had done did not last past the corner ride..

I also managed to acquire another large tank.. This time a 28 liter tank.. Scored it off ebay for $325.. Great shape and fits like a glove, except of course the cross bar that mounts under the tank between the fixed shrouds.. The biggun header is routed different from the stock one and is in the way.. Turns out the DRZ400E stock header works with the Biggun exhaust.. I’ve yet to confirm this but from what I have observed it looks like it is so.. I plan on re-mounting the stock header so the 28 liter tank is usable.. :woohoo:

    Thanks for reading……….

Sounds the business Krusty, I’m keen to see it on some Coffs singles mate! Theirs not many bikes you could ride through the outback on a big ride one week then spend a few hours swapping parts and get straight into the tight stuff!

Go to love the versatile DRZ!!

    Thanks Fellas…

Well I had her out on the trails this weekend.. Decided to take my little girl to the Owl farm and dragged my bike along.. Both knee and bike performed awesome.. I had her blasting down some tight singles and it took awhile to get some confidence but man o man she performed well and helped with confidence as she just stuck like glue and went right where I pointed her.. The heavier spring TB put on before the corner made a difference I reckon.. I had her jumping as well got some huge air(weel huge for me ;) ) and not one bottoming out..

Trouble starting it cold but hopefully fixed this week

15/44 is to tall for the trails I now believe.. I have a 47 that Gaz took off after purchasing his DR so I’ll throw it on for the coffs trip and see how it goes…

Yeah Boony pain in arse them headlight assemblies..
