My bike has been running great when i bought it ,was running bp 95 + 50/1 , then started foualing plugs ,needle N8RH on second clip 165 main.Changed to third clip 162 main now idles low then high overheats ,also now sounds like a 4 stroke but still goes real hard as ktm,s do.any thoughts would be great ?
October 1, 2012 at 3:22 am #230068sounds like its running to lean, with it over heating but as you dropped the needle a clip it should have sorted it out, have you blown the jets out and just done a general clean out and how many turns have you got your air mixture screw out
October 22, 2012 at 7:41 am #231155Nice looking bike.
1 or even 3 rides isn’t enough to adapt your riding style to a 2t. It does get easier with a few rides under your belt. It took me about 5 rides to click with my 300 and then a few months to hone my skills.
In terms of power delivery you can mae these things as mild or as wild as you want, you just have to know how. If you want any help let me know, I’ve been there and done that.
Otherwise, good luck with the sale, someone will get a tidy ride
October 24, 2012 at 9:15 am #231156Westy has PM’d me and decided to give his bike a bit more time to make a proper impression (I hope you don’t mind me saying!).
Best bet Westy is to list the foillwoing specs if you can and we can help, as I’ve just discovered you’re a local I’m also more than willing to meet up and help you tweak some settings to get it to ride more in line with what you want/were expecting.
The benefit of a KTM/Berg 2t is that they are so tuneable, this can also be a downside though if you just want to throw a leg over it and ride…….the difference can be significant.
If you can, list what you are running in terms of:
Gearing = 13/50?
Jetting – Pilot, main, needle, clip position and air screw
Suspension settings as well as sag numbers (the rear spring looks stock, how much do you weigh?)
Power valve spring and dolly screw adjustment
Ignition setting – Traction or power? (this is the wire with the connector near your CDI)
Any other mods? (SX CDI, shaved head, modded squish band and/or angle, higher compression etc.)
Lokks like an M12 rear tyre, they are ghey for a 2t in the Watagan’s by the way……What pipe is it, the muffler is a KTM powerparts item, is the expansion chamber a KTM pipe too (means a rebranded FMF Fatty)?
October 24, 2012 at 9:43 am #231334Oooh so looking forward to this thread for Input (giving my experience so far) and Output (getting some tips).
Westy; hang in there with the 2Banger, that is one beautiful bike you have. Day 1 for me back on a two stroke (everyone knows the story) I thought “WTF have I done purchasing this thing! It’s a nasty biatch that’s gonna kill me!!”
But, after a couple of rides, a bit of an ‘adjustment’ to my riding style and the bike I’m totally loving it.
For Moto’s list for my Berg 300 I’m;
Gearing: standard (no idea what that is?)
Jetting:– JD Kit for Pilot, #162 Main Jet (the sea-level one), Red-tip needle clip position #5 (they recommended #4 but it didn’t “feel” right … I added the kit mainly for the fuel economy bonus but it does feel much better as a result too
Suspension settings and (your) weight, as well as sag numbers: I haven’t done sag yet but I put everything to “Standard” and it feels Ok for my weight of 72kg … the front still needs tuning though as compression feels harsh, need to do sag as well coz I’m a bit of a short ass and the bike feels a bit tall for me sometimes
Power valve spring and dolly screw adjustment: I put the Red one in, and wound the Dolly flush with the housing (read it on the net and tested it last week, loved it!)
Ignition setting – Traction or power? (this is the wire with the connector near your CDI): Is this the switch on the handlebars with I or II? I switch between the two … it is noticeable (slightly) when you do and is a bit tamer on II to give you a break from the power
Any other mods? (SX CDI, shaved head, modded squish band and/or angle, higher compression etc.):None for me yet … I want to get it handling right before I scare the sh*t out of myself (any more) with power modsTo reiterate … hang in there, “learn” to ride it and get the setup right for you.. I don’t reckon you’re gonna regret it at all in the end.
October 24, 2012 at 9:54 am #231340Razz – Needle clip 5 is like running your for clikers all the way clockwise. Possible but nou suggested. In terms of jetting, if you’re at an extreme on the needle it’s not the right needle.
Set suspension to ‘comfort’, I used comfort for a while and I’m much heavier than you. You need to set the sag KTM/Berg’s are very sensitive to the set-up. 5mm wrong on the rear sag and front end can feel like shit….I’ve learnt the hard way!
If you’re comfortable with the 2 banger, red spring and flush is the only way to go
Ignition, yes probably the switch with I and II. It’s a negligable difference and only really noticable in the mid/upper rev range.
Yes, get the handling right first. Squish mods can improve bottom end grunt, combustion and fuel efficiency…not just reserved for ripping your arm out power.
October 24, 2012 at 10:00 am #231351plus one on the clip 5 on the needle sounds a bit rich there moto , razzle have a listen to what motos got to say when i bought my 2010 ktm 300 he give me advice on setting it up , with the jetting and needles it was exactly the way i wanted it
October 24, 2012 at 10:06 am #231353Hmm, don’t want to railroad Westy’s thread … but hopefully all this is helpful for him as well.
I was questioning whether being at the “extreme” of the needle meant something else was astray …. oh dear, need to revisit that.
October 24, 2012 at 10:41 am #231101All good guys, i am pretty mechanically minded but have had sweet F A to do with setting up jetting on 2 bangers but MOTO lives fairly close to me so i am hoping i can get a hand how to do that, when i picked the bike up it had the red spring in it and i rode it and thought F*#K me this is stupid so i took it out and put the standard one in and know i must admit it feels a little soft. The front suspension feels a bit slow to turn but i think the legs are sticking up through the triple clamp to much ( approx 15mm).

This more than likely confirms you have poor clicker adjustments and/or (more likely) too much rear sag/wrong spring weights
Don’t worry Westy, we’ll have you ripping in no time
October 24, 2012 at 10:49 am #231374If you keep it get the rear shock done professionally the progressive spring and valve to suit by Tekniks has me liking the rear of the 530 and has sold Lefty, Crash and Chris72a
I used to bag PDS and I still will but its good

Nooooooooo! Don’t leave me, I need clip/needle/jetting advice! …… oh crap  Now I wish I never read this thread, I feel like my bike setup is all wrong now [grrrr]
Seriously though, good luck Westy, I’ll keep reading with interest and hope to meet up with you as a “happy 2banger rider” on a ride soon.
