I have been asked to sort out a starter problem on a KTM400. It will only start every now and then on the starter. It has a brand new battery in it but when you press the starter button…….nothing happens. Then all of a sudden out of the blue it will start if you hit the button.More often then not it will not even turn the starter.I am inclined to think it is the actual starter button, but if anyone else has experience with a similar problem please post up.

Does it have a key as well, I had the problem on the WR, it turned out to be the Barrell where the key was not engaging all the time, took it off and replaced the key with the button included in the spares kit, sorted, but I don;t think KTM;s have keys.

nah no keys, this bike is really tidy and has never seen a dirt road and has bugger all km’s on it.

is it one of the new 400’s or an older one.

It is an older one,it is silver and orange. I would suggest about a 2000 model.
It has one of those kill buttons that dont stay “clicked in”,unlike the newer models.

A continuity test on the wiring Mick?, what jumps to mind straight up all else being equal for I is a “dead spot” in the starter motor itself, or the dodgy killswitch scenario

I can fix a dodgy switch but the dead spot in the starter maybe a job for a auto sparky.

A dead segment on the actuator would mean a new starter, multi meter and test the continuity of the switch like Blue said would easiest start point

Why did they give it to you?

It is the bloke who owns the building I work in and he has seen me with a Kato or two in the past and asked if I would try and sort it out for him, as he has no mechanical aptitude what so ever.
If I get it sorted, it maybe worth a carton or two
I am just gunna pull the switch apart and spray some contact cleaner in there for starters and work from there.
