Working on the rear tank template, I hope to have it ready for the 3/4th November Nav Ride.
October 22, 2012 at 11:13 am #231186Hey Lefty nice work been waiting to see this since you spoke about it. With the lowest point of the tank being ( in the pictures ) lower than the carby even with the suspension unloaded how will you get the fuel to the carby? Are you fitting a vacuum pump like some big tank bikes have? Would it pay to also pop the shock out and check the swing arm right through its travel, I could call in tomorrow and help you with that little job (could get thirsty I will get some refreshments
)
Is there much to be gained in modifying the side cover plastic to get the tank higher against the alloy sub frame where it runs up?Good stuff love the outside the square thinking (even from the Italians :laugh: ) will call over this week

October 22, 2012 at 9:11 pm #231187Good Points there TB, all of these items have been covered, I think, :dry: I had the shock out (as you can see it is on the floor) and put the suspension through its full travel etc to ensure there will be no fouling from tyres, chain etc. The bottom of the tank is parallel with the swingarm on full bump. As for the bottom of the tank being lower than the carbie it it only the very bottom maybe 100ml of fuel or so. I will wait and see what happens there :blink: but we have the technology to fix these issues should they arise.
Thanks for your input
Cheers,
The Left OneOctober 26, 2012 at 10:09 am #231199Well the rear tank is complete and ready for launch! :blink: We’ll see how she goes next week.

October 26, 2012 at 10:25 am #231487Yeah fast work, looks good how much does it hold?
TB
October 26, 2012 at 10:30 am #231488It holds 6ltrs which should give me a range of around 300km hopefully.
October 26, 2012 at 10:41 am #220181SO if we spot the Left One walking on Day 2,,, it didn`t give you 300k then hey ??? :laugh:
Nice work mate,,, and as TB said, QUICK
Cheers
October 26, 2012 at 10:45 am #231489So whats planned for the rear suspension with the extra weight of the tank, fuel and loaded loop? Be interested in how it handles change of direction etc the further the weight is back greater the pendulum effect.
I know how the 530 feels when the back tank is full and it would be half the weight of the tank and loop. It’s ok I guess because it’s an ADV setup after all. And the after a while you get used to it like when we did Hattah, I got the fuel out fast as I could always running of the back. When it missed I would turn the front tap of for a while half fill the back and switch it off again until the whole fuel load was low.You are welcome to check out how I set the taps etc up of the 530 works great and has been tested

Yeah it may need some suspension work, more than likely but for next week end I will ride it and see how it responds. I will play with the clickers in the short term then I need to save up some $ and talk to Nick.
I have no tap on the rear tank only a filter so it will be similar to the 530 but I would like to have a look for sure. But I do agree I need to use the rear tank 1st and get rid of the rear weight, so I may put a tap in the rear tank so is doesn’t refill.We will see eh.
October 27, 2012 at 8:42 am #231497Went back to work this morning and messed around with the fuel delivery set up of the twin tanks. I was looking at putting another tap on the rear tank, which i would really like to do but I am fairly limited with room. I will have to re-route a few items I think. However I put some protection around the fuel line which comes out ot the rear tank as it is low and can rub on the frame. :huh: It will be fine for the maiden voyage though.
I will do some suspension set up through the week as the extra weight on the rear will require a spring preload adjustment, probably a rear spring, and some clicker adjustment. :dry: We’ll will see how time permits before launch day on Friday.Can’t Wait!! :woohoo:

LeftyOctober 29, 2012 at 8:58 am #231511I decided to put a tap in-line for the rear tank, which i am now alot happier with. It means that i can isolate both tanks from the carbie if needed or turn on or off which ever tank I like. This then means I can completely empty the rear tank to get the weight off the rear ASAP or I can either leave open ther rear tap so fuel can drain down from the front tank to the rear to change the weight distribution on the bike. It should be interesting to see how it feels.
Here are some pics;
I also rode down to see Nick from Teknik all fully geared up to talk to him about suspension set up. Nick was great and said that I was on the right track with what I had done to date by increasing spring preload and adjusting the clickers to compensate for the extra weight in the short term. After the Nav ride this weekend I will take it back to Nick and discuss how the bike now behaves so he can do his magic on the suspenders.
Bring On Saturday :woohoo: :woohoo:

The Left OneOctober 29, 2012 at 9:13 am #231606Jeez Lefty, that sounds like a lot of unnecessary work. You, your gear and the 6kg of extra fuel would still be 20kg lighter than the average bloke
