Hey guy’s
Now that I’ve got my new ride, I need to set it up for me, looking at the manual that came with it, it’s set up for a 85kg person, now I’m a heavy build character, and I haven’t been 85kg since I was 16. I guess I ate far too much red meat when I was growing up. After a few years and far too many trips to the pub, I’m not 110kg so I’m guessing that I need to set the bike up for 120kg, after I put all my gear on.
Looking at the manual I need to get a heavy duty spring for the rear shocks, does any body know where I can get them? and is there just one type of heavier spring, Also any further tips would be great, This suspension has changed alot since I was looking at the motorbikes that had dual sprung shocks with no swingarms.
August 9, 2009 at 8:28 am #147568i ride a ktm 530 08 model and run a 8.4 rear spring and 5.0 fork springs and wieght about 104kg have found with the heavyer springs can hit big bumps harder but is harder on the arms after a ride may need a revalve but am to tight .tecknics will sell you the correct springs for your weight just give them a ring not cheep but just tell them your weight you will need fork springs to .if your bike is older than 08 the rear spring rates are different than what i said different set up
August 9, 2009 at 8:43 am #147569when i had an 03 300, told the ktm bloke (no longer works for them:( ) my weight and he recommened a spring for front and rear.
the other shop i got the springs from did not have the size /rate suggested but softer one that was longer, they reckon would do same just tighten it up to pre load it.
being i did a deal when i bought the bike the springs were not all that dear, sorry i do not remember prices. the preferred shop fitted the fronts as i had no idea, again not sure of $ but was not much, i fitted the rear myself.
now it all worked really well for me but light blokes did not like it.
but as Rocket said give the pro’s a ring,
and call the shop you bought it from and see if you can squeeze a deal out of them.
that is if you bought it from a shop. sorry i think i may have you/your bike mixed up with another member that just bought a new 450:blush:

ok, I’ll give the dealer a call in the morning.
August 9, 2009 at 11:35 am #147570dozza, Teknik sell rear springs for $189.00 just tell them your weight and they match a spring for your bike. I dont know if you can get them cheaper elsewhere but i bought one of theres and am happy with it.
September 28, 2009 at 8:11 am #147571Hi guy’s
I’ve finally got around to getting a new spring and I started to change it, but I need a little help.
I’ve got a 2009 450EXC and I cant find anything that shows you how to remove and replace the old spring from the shock. I’ve found the WP PDS for the earlier model but nothing for my 2009.
Looking at it I can see 3 possible ways to get the spring off, but I’m hesitant incase I stuff it up. If anybody knows how to do this please let me know.
The 3 different ways I can see:
1. the nut around the rebound dampener adjustment on the bottom of the shock
2. if you pry the rubber stopper at the bottom of the shock it shows a collar around the shock shaft with 2 flattened edges that you could get a open ended spanner on
3. unscrew the entire top off the shock, but I guess this would mean regassing. Please if you have any answers they’d be appreciated. I can upload photo if needed.
