On Sunday i went along to the KTM Dirt Bike Days event
It was a ride day organised by KTM Australia that you signed up for any three of the latest 2010 EXC/SX models :cheer:
I signed up for the 300EXC, 450EXC and 250EXCF.
The ride was held at the Appin motocross club complex (first time i’d been there)it’s a very good set up
KTM had their team truck there for applicants to sign in and fill out a one day MRA license, if you didn’t already have one.
It cost $25.00 for the license and then you were ok to go.
If you wanted to ride the SX models you had 2 – 3 loops of the motocross track and for the EXCs you had 1 loop of the enduro track (guesstimate about 2 ks)
I can only report on the enduro loop as i am not much of an MX rider (read crap) .
At sign in you received a sticker that you put on your helmet with the bikes you had chosen highlighted to be marked off as you went to the bike.(stops you having more rides than allocated)
After this we all hung around in a big group and waited for your designated bike to turn up.
This was a bit of a mess at first but it soon sorted itself out.
There were a number of the bike shop sales guys on hand to help you get set up on the bikes and point out some of the features.
Then you were basically let loose on the loop.
The loop itself was more technical than i had assumed but it was a good representation of most of the riding you would encounter on the trail.
Rocks, ruts, mud, more mud, single track through trees, did i mention mud?
From the feedback of the group waiting to ride there had been a few get offs and a couple of people got bogged (read me!) .
There were a number of sweeps so if you did get into trouble help was not far away.
Of the 3 bikes i rode i was most impressed with the 250EXCF, for the tight single track it was great, it has a good spread of torque and handles like it’s on rails.
The 300 was also an awesome machine and if i had the cash i think i would have bought one. It’s handling is similar to the 250 but it has extra power at hand. The 300 i rode also had the mapping button on the bars so that you could change from standard to mild settings on the fly.
The 450 wasn’t all that inspiring probably because i have an 05 model and expected them to be the same.
Mine is set up for me so i was probably trying to draw unfair comparisons.
All in all it was a great dayyou get to ride the 2010 bikes :cheer: and it’s a great way to try out a bike that you may want to buy in the future or just to ride one for the experience.
If you get a chance to go on one of these ride days i couldn’t recommend it highly enoughRebore.

And being bogged aint so bad gives more time on the bike, and then you can check out the grab handles for those times when your in the shite.
July 26, 2010 at 4:03 am #184692Hello twobanger,
Yeh! the loop was great.
I would have serously liked to have some more rounds on it. As you got used to it it just got better and better.
Didn’t use the grab rail technique i went for the “give it a massive fist full” program.Seemed to work !
July 26, 2010 at 4:55 am #184686Really wish I had known about it. Would have been very keen to get a ride on the 350 SX-F and the 450 SX-F.
July 26, 2010 at 12:50 pm #184696You must have been very lucky. I had put down my name and my two sons names months ago never even got a phone call or email from KTM, spewing!!! A couple of weeks ago got a random email from a local dealer but no invite, asking me to put my name down for a 350SX, how did they get my email address, i wonder – doh KTm MArketing Australia. A little bit pissed (read jealous)given your story. I would have dearly appreciated the opportunity to ride the bikes back to back. I had put down for the 450exc, 400exc and 300exc. Did I mention how pissed I am.
Really happy you had a great day, interesting to hear your comments about the 250excf. I am really pissed.

July 26, 2010 at 10:50 pm #184731Hello Unit,
The 400EXC was not available for some reason? So you didn’t miss out there.
The 250EXCF was a nice surprise and if i was 20kg lighter i’d probably get one but i have always wanted to try the 300 and i wasn’t dissapointed.
The 300 had that bit more grunt i require and i am an old two stroke man so i guess there was some nostalgia attached to the assesment.
Also whoever came up with the idea of an electric start on a two stroke needs a medal it was brilliant!August 3, 2010 at 12:23 pm #184740Hi Rebore450
In respect of the 250EXCF can I ask 20 kgs little than what? Just so I have an impression of your suggested ideal weight for one.
Also, in respect of the 300exc i hear all sorts comments, ideal bike that can be lugged around or you can ring its neck off if your game (and on your game). I am more a plodder and I just ask if you think it can be ridden comfortably by a plodder?
