Last Sunday i attended the KTM Dirt Days at Appin.
This is the same event that was held last year, you sign up on the net, pay $25 and pick three of the 2012 KTMs that you would like to ride.:cheer:
Turning up on the day the rides are held down at the back of Appin motorcycle complex.
There is the motocross track for the SX bikes and a bush loop for the EXCs.
Unlike the disorganised mess of last year it was well organised with seperate entrances for the bikes that you selected.
One entrance had the 2 strokes, one for the 450exc and 500 exc, one for the 350exc and one for the motocross.
You just lined up at the gate for your chosen bikes.
On sign in we received a wrist band with three tear off numbers that were removed as you rode each of your selected bikes.
I met Adam, Sam and The Spud there had a chat and we lined up for our respective rides.
The bush loop was pretty much the same as last year, we were there on the late session so it was rutted and rocky with some stretches of nice slippery mud / clay thrown in.
My choices were the 300EXC, 350EXC and the 500EXC.
300EXc was first as i have always liked these bikes and it brings back the old 2T memories.
As usual the 300 hundred surprises with the amount of torque it has and how easy it is to tractor. In these conditions and with my riding / fitness level it was not an easy bike to settle into.
350EXC was next and while waiting in line i had heard mixed reports. I was interested to try the diffference of this bike to the 450.
I have to say i am impressed with the new 350 engine, with fuel injection it seems to develop the same power as a 450 in a lighter frame / handling package.
It was much easier to ride in the singles than my 450 and had smooth to explosive power with a simple twist of the wrist.
I had a chat to Adam after his ride and he was so impressed that there was talk of a change from the DRZ to the orange 350.
The 500EXC was the next cab of the rank and i was a little dubious as to wether it would be better than the 350.
Well from my point of view this is an awesome bike, it feels lighter than a 450 certainly steers better and again with the fuel injection the power was available right off the bottom.
You could ride the bike at slow speeds or open the throttle and be rewarded with the front wheel lifting easily.
Of the three bikes i rode and if i had the money i would buy the 350.
The 500 is excellent but would tire me out and the 300 as always is great but i can’t get the hang of 2T riding anymore.
Had a gret day i would recommend the KTM Dirt Days to anyone who is interested in trying a brand new KTM.
A word of warning though for you who don’t ride orange bikes.
It’s much easier to be satisfied with mediocre if youve never tried the best.
Sorry no pictures i was having too much fun.
Rebore.
