Just received a letter from KTM
They are organising the retro fit of a 20 micron fuel filter to replace the existing 10 micron unit.
I rang my local dealer and they said they will ring me next week when they have the new filters in stock.
I have had an issue of my 500 stopping on a couple of occasions not long after I bought it but each occasion it righted itself. Haven’t had an issue since and I have about 2500kms on her.
I’d imagine this retro fit will eliminate any further hicups
So for all you EFI KTM dudes expect a letter in the mail soon or ring your dealer to enquire
Cheers

March 14, 2012 at 4:10 pm #218114Hey Krusty
Sounds like you’ve been doing your homework.
I have been running the tank sock since new, mate.
Hope you enjoy your new bike
Cheers
MurphMarch 14, 2012 at 4:33 pm #218115The other question I have is if they went from the first filter then to a 10 micron and now to 20 micron what size contaminants with possibly block the injector or cause fuel pump issues. They must have been concerned at the start and then to go to a 10 micron. Why would they over filter (eg fit a 10 when a 20 can do the job, a 10 will risk blocking easier) if it could handle 20 microns. I teach clean engine care, fuel system care and the company I work for owns fleetguard filters (one of the largest filter companies in the world) know that 1 micron is small (one millionth of a metre) but they have doubled the filter size in other words halved the filtration ability? So if it’s now going to get past the filter can the pump and injector handle the contaminants that are twice the original filtered size? Given that their sister comapny Husaberg has seen a few pump and injectors problems maybe tahts why it was so filtered to started with? Hang onto your tow rope Murph. I hope I am wrong but i just wonder
It’s interesting this problem as the Tenere is fuel injected, it is stock no extra socks or filters and some of the remote shit places we fuel with no problem makes me wonder why they are having so many dramas.

Murph:laugh:  Well sort of… I was afraid of EFI but the more and more I read about others experiences the more relaxed I became.. I suppose EFI is the future so why not…
March 14, 2012 at 4:50 pm #218125Hey TB
Don’t know why KTM designed the bike to run with a 10 micron filter if a 20 would still be OK.
I have heard that overseas fuel is of better quality. Still no reason to use the finer filter. But it could be a reason why they are changing to the coarser filter here in Oz.
Krusty, I am so old school, I live in a cave.
Yet I own a knew EFI dirt bike.
Don’t worry, I was scared shitless of buying the new breed.
But apart from the three little hicups it had at about the 300km mark all has been great.
I took it to the shop and the KTM Guru’s hooked it up to a computer but they found no problem.
Personally I have put it down to a residue or something that was originally in the tank or system.
I have also checked the v/v clearances at 2000km and all was within tolerance.
Cheers
MurphMarch 14, 2012 at 5:00 pm #218126Yeah its interesting Murph, would love to know whats really behind it. They will never tell  Good luck with it, there are a few giving grief  Personally I love EFI and its the future the Jap bikes have been using it for a few years without a problem so it should be able to be sorted

TBHaven’t the 690’s been running EFI for a few years now? Does anyone know what the differences are between what the 690 has and what the 2012 enduro models got?

I would think given the engine size there would be a fair bit of difference. Without part numbers etc you wouldnt know. The 690 isnt without its own EFI problems, there was talk of people entering the APC rally on 690’s carrying pumps or injector. Look on the KTM forums, Eagle put a bloke onto Sutto’s from Canberra that couldnt get his sorted down there. The 990s also have their own fuel problems with pumps I am sure it is.

The 20 micron filter is after the pump so it won’t affect it, would be nice to know the nozzle size of the injector
I have been running the 20 micron filter since the Neville ride and she’s going fine.
Maybe it was the bigger filter that made me run into Rocket

this cements my thoughts of waiting a couple of models before I go EFI !!!
March 14, 2012 at 10:56 pm #218148those efi bikes run sweet but boony those new kato s look to orange for me but
March 14, 2012 at 10:56 pm #218106There are`nt really any big probs with it Boony,,,
Its only a filter and as Murph stated,,,,, His sorted itself out & hasn`t been a problem since :whistle:We have all seen how he rides & the terrain he covers, so that`s a good enough test for me
I also have had no signs of any fuel pump or filter issues in 7000k
Just good clean fuel where possible & be careful around the filler cap when excessive dirt is presentMarch 15, 2012 at 12:18 am #218107Just got the same letter for my Berg. They already had the larger filter fitted when I picked it up in January.
