I have never seen a piston like this, I will explain.
Dr Love fingers is what they call me and today I took the little KTM 50,(from someone who will remain nameless)into the love-shack and did some love massaging to work out why Katie wont play, well all I can tell you is I have not seen a running(very badly mind you)2 smoker actually run with a 4.5 mm end gap….Yes guy a 4.5mm end gap…..its no wonder the thing had no compression, if it was a honda or yamaha it would not have started I’ll bet, looking from the top down at the ring if you hold it in your hand, the opposite edge has worn so much that it was around .8mm thick, the ring was about to fall into two pieces and the darling little Katie still wanted to love you long time,
I threw a piston and ring into it and it ran like a demon and now there are some older preexisting issues with leaking side covers and gearbox vent tubes missing and such, tomorrow the thing gets a carby upgrade and then I will play with the ports and pipe combo, I will also address the clutch hookup and when the little champ who I spoke to on the phone tonight gets it back he will love it, what is his Honda obsessed father have to say now…..face facts nameless father your boy has seen the light at 5…cool isn’t it….and I helped…I only wish I could see both Dad’s and son’s face when they get it back from the Doctor.February 4, 2009 at 12:47 pm #120671Not a bite from the nameless one, he must be asleep

February 4, 2009 at 7:10 pm #120684There is nothing to bite about, the young bloke has ridden it 3 times since we got it, it hasn’t been dusted as you told me Dave, it had compression until all of a sudden and it overheated, there’s more to it than a bike that rode fine and all of a sudden developed a 4.5mm ring end cap, as I said on the phone Dave wheres the missing piece of ring because I spoke with a guy that was here when I pulled the barrel of and he said it didnt have a 4.5mm ring cap, no there’s more to this Dave, and yes I do so appreciate your time and efforts as does Kieran as you know.
February 4, 2009 at 7:13 pm #120685It never missed a beat in the year that we owned it. Admittedly Taylah raced it and held it pinned most of the time.

That is the kinda guy I am I suppose. I still kinda feel guilty, that’s why I am dubious about selling anything to Mates, I would rather not know if it blows up. I have sold 40 bikes in the last 2 years and that is the first one that blew up just after it was sold.
When it is fixed,Moose said he will deliver it to Kemps Creek for you.

Get over yourself Mick

February 4, 2009 at 7:46 pm #120694I am sorry Mick, you know I love you
February 4, 2009 at 8:25 pm #120695You Honda riders are so far up yourselves you missed the point, Man a KTM still running with the ring end gap from hell !!!!!.
And TB as far as me not knowing how to measure, I used 4 1/2 dead fleas that I lined up and that equates to 4.5 mm… At least I didnt use the thumbnail like normal
and Mick the bikes you sold , you did not say anything about them being sold to deaf , dumb and blind people, They wont wear them out will they
So once again for the Honda riders………..4.5 mmm gap and still started…..I challenge any Honda to that….I might get to Bull’s Ranch and get one of his Z’s out and do the same to it ring end gap, I bet it wont start…..
So do you guys see what I am saying now……4.5 mmm and started:laugh: :laugh:February 4, 2009 at 8:40 pm #120698Dont think a z would run with that end gap but maybe we should check the ring gap on the XL185 as it uses more oil than fuel
February 4, 2009 at 8:52 pm #120703You are right KTMRAT a Honda would not run with that sort of end gap, because it wouldn,t have to. By the time it would have worn that far, it would have passed through several familys 50 kids and the original owner would have been buried for 50 years. Gota love reliability!!!!!
