Those of you who know me are aware that i have an ’08 KTM450 EXC-R. I rode a mates 2010 Husaberg 390FE on the weekend and couldn’t believe how well it turned. I know that it is a totally different bike from engine config etc. but it felt so nimble. When i did the initial set up on the KTM to acheive the correct rider sag with the std spring i had to take some preload off the rear spring; however that dropped the static sag to around 58mm which is too much; however i left this so i have the correct rider sag, around 100mm but the turn is shit. So i then dropped the forks through the triple clamps 7mm and it did improve the turn but not as good as the Berg. The KTM tends to wash or under steer in the front which is not very confidence inspiring in most situations. I have read that in the states they came out with 18mm offset triple clamps and not 20mm like the ones in Australia. This is said to increase the trail and make the front more stable.
Has anyone got any tips? I have now raised the rear again but have not ridden it. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
NO I will not buy a Honda TB!
Cheers,
LeftyAugust 22, 2011 at 12:25 am #207500Have thought of ditching the KTM and buying a Berg? OR maybe the 350 EXC. :woohoo:
Just about every KTM I have ridden had front end issues. A mate has an 07 525 and put 17mm tripple clamps on and he says it settled the front a fair bit.
Also sounds like you might the wrong rear spring. Evil Rudy may be able to shed some light on that.

I was told to lower the rear more today and cut the rear subframe. It would end up an f*#%n chopper then and never turn. :blink:August 22, 2011 at 1:22 am #207508Do you want the double or single room? Tell her there’s a near new bathroom for you to use here too.
There would be nearly no weight on the rear spring by now. Maybe try splitting the diiference between static and rider sag. Doesn’t sound like you’ll make it any worse.
What offset are the Berg triple clamps. Maybe a set of them might be cheaper than the aftermarket ones.
Until Rudy chimes in I’ll keep thinking of ideas.
Oh and the shed has a bed and bathroom too if your not comfortable staying in the house with us…

She is what she is, mate. The trouble I see is spending good coin to get nowhere.
Wish I had an answer, but I dont.
My 450exc has also let me down, at the front end. Thought it was rider error, was more like lacking bike !Good luck seeking the answer.

You mention lowering crown height and jacking up the rear end a little which should help but you could also try an offset bar mount. You are not a heavy guy so centering your mass a little further forward may help keep the front wheel more planted.

August 22, 2011 at 1:35 am #207513And maybe try slowing your rebound a bit. It will start to pack up in stutters but should help keep the front end from jacking up.

August 22, 2011 at 1:38 am #207511do you have bar raisers (i dout it )or an under bar steering damper(take them of) too high a bars seem to stuff up turn in i took the rasers of my 08 530 and lent the bars back a bit and this helped a fair bit(not as cumfy standing but) .i did not believe this untill i tryed it.reckon the correct spring would help two have a look on tecknics web sight it has spring rates and rider weights on it.if the backs that far out the front springs prably needs changing to $$$ i got some in the shed
August 22, 2011 at 2:11 am #207515What about steering dampener or 2012 350exc do the bathroom yourself and put the money you save to a new bike, Try some tile paint, she’ll never notice

  The shed will be fine!
I am about 75kg with all my gear on and ready to ride. Which should be fine with the std spring. The only thig is that the berg triple clamps are 22mm which gives less trail. I have been reading KTM Talk and the majority of guys reckon go to 18mm offset to increase trail; this gives a more planted feel through singles etc; however this will give less stability at higher speed but this is over come by more steering dampening at speed as well as moving the rear wheel as far back as possible….
I will keep experimenting.
Thanks for your help.
August 22, 2011 at 2:56 am #207524From watching it when you ride Lefty I reckon the rear isnto soft and needs more preload wound into the spring

Yeah thanks STM,
On the std triple clamps I have 4 bar positions. Mine was at position 2 I will now try Position 3 which is futher forward of the pivot point. So this in theory shuld bring my eight a little further forward.

No i don’t have bar risers (vertically challenged mate)And my steering damper is an over bar type. I will have a chat to tekniks and see what they think; but I am sure it can be better. At the birthday ride it was awesome at Sunny Corner but i had new tyres and there was good grip. As soon as it gets a bit loose that is when it is a pain in the arse. I will keep trying. thaks for your input.
As I say Every Day is a School Day!
Cheers
