I finally parted with the old KLX and got my hands on a 05 KTM450, I am wondering what sort of problems / nuances people have found over the years with them and what I can do to make her a little more bullet proof?
Cheers

EEEEEEEEEEEKKK!!! A KTM450 is gunna be a weapon in your hands Justin, you used to send that KLX at an alarming pace!! Murph the Surf would be the man to talk to regarding Kato 450’s.

Have an 07, change oil every 500kms, all filters 2 x filters(change) 2 x screens(clean) every 2nd change, cooling system 1 x year(flush). 8000km still going strong.
Bottom pivot joint 1 x year, valve adjustment every 1500km (15 min job)- have heard about new cam chain tensioner being a must for earlier models ($150.00)
The rattle noise is std, when mine goes a little quiet, thats when i adjust the valves, no problems so far.
Get used to looking behind you, thats where the hondas will be   :laugh:cheers Hatto
January 14, 2011 at 4:02 am #194220It comes down to maintenance, If you look after it, it will look after you, i had an 03 450 from new and did well over 100,xxxkm and it never replaced anything in the motor except oil, filters, plugs.
God i miss the old girl
January 14, 2011 at 5:37 am #194221:blink: is that 100 000 km correct Tisco??
you didn’t have to do cam chain or cam bearings?? or even rings??
January 15, 2011 at 2:15 am #19422210,000 sorry,
in the end i only ever did valve clearance’s.January 15, 2011 at 3:58 am #194661
no worries Tisco. knowing how busy everyone is, it’s a wonder there aren’t a lot more typo’s.i sort of was hoping it was 100 000. but gathered you must have meant 10 000. just had to double check though.
in saying that 10 000 km with only valve clearances is still pretty good.
